If you get the chance, the brand new Tig Novarro standup routine on Netflix is pretty good, too. I'm not sure if I'm spelling her name right, and am too exhausted from the workday to check.

Behind the Green Lights Marilyn Chambers is a socialite who is forcibly . . . wait, sorry that was Behind the Green Doors. Behind the Green Lights stars William Gargan as a police detective in an unnamed midwestern city. A car rolls up to the station with a sleezy private eye's body inside. Pretty good low budget noir film. Only runs an hour, but is really well paced.

John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City Good stand-up from the former SNL writer. This was really good! The "horse loose in the hospital" analogy, the "That's not funnay!" in Mick Jagger accent...good stuff.

Check out The Comeback Kid, too. It's almost as good.

I've been meaning to watch Mulaney's stand-up specials. He did a segment when he hosted SNL that was some of the best material I've heard in a while, plus I love the sketch material he does with Nick Kroll.

I'd never seen him on SNL, but his standup was this near constant monologue for the entire runtime. Obviously, most comedians' stand-up performances are like that, but this was positively manic.

I'm seeing him in October.

Anybody else hyped for this Heredity movie due out this Friday? We hope to catch it during one of the advance preview showings on Thursday. It's getting a lot of buzz as this generation's Exorcist and "scariest horror movie in years".

I should probably give The Exorcist another shot. I watched it once about 25 years ago and found it very dull, but its reputation is that it's fucking amazing.

I think it helps to see it in a theater. The first time I saw it was at a midnight screening with a friend who'd already watched it and had a similar reaction, and at one point earlier in the movie, he leaned over to me and said, "I've got to admit, this is way creepier on the big screen." Unless the one time you saw it was in a theater, in which case I'm talking out of my ass.

I was actually a little too young to catch The Exorcist on it's initial theater run. Scared me shitless when I did finally get around to it. Mind you, I was still fairly young. Maybe junior high school? I think there were aspects of it that were game-changers for the time. I mean, a lot of horror movies from that era delved into elements like children/babies as either evil or in peril, and occult horror was all the rage then, with some other excellent films along those lines. But The Exorcist had folks going, "Did that little girl just say that?" "Wait. Am I really watching this child jamming a crucifix up her privates while blaspheming up a storm?". For me, the head doing the 180 on the bed was a heart-stopper, but there's other creepy scenes in The Exorcist that make it one of the all-time best horror films I've ever seen. That Tubular Bells soundtrack by Mike Oldfield really sets the menacing mood, too.
You know, all that said, there's a thousand films since then that were gorier or delve into really ugly subject matter, and I'm sure it would seem like a slow burn as compared to the crazy shit around today. There were a lot of good, moody, atmospheric horrors in those 70's years. When they're done right, like many from that period, they can give that cold shiver up the spine that I as a horror movie fan, just love. The Exorcist provided both the shiver scares and the adrenaline rush that is so popular in today's horror films. I dunno. That was a lot of rambling, and I still didn't make a very strong case for exactly what it is about that film that holds such high regard among so many horror fans.

So, Heredity was a decent little occult horror, but I think it got too much advance buzz. It has some solid creepiness and a couple of righteous frights, but it just got too pumped up in the advance publicity I'd seen.

The Depahted A bunch of rats in Boston's Irish mob try to outmaneuver other rats in the Boston police department. Apparently this won Best Picture for no reason I can understand.

I don't know if the misspell is intentional, but it's hilarious to me because that's exactly how they'd say it in the movie.
