Man, I'm on a bad streak. Wasn't expecting a movie night last night, so when the guru showed up, and didn't have any idea what to watch. I had just downloaded one called "Pumpkins" (2018) and being Halloween season, I figured why not? Seriously bad call on my part. That was godawful. Much as with “Fables of the Witching Hour”, there is literally nothing to recommend here.

Broke the bad watch streak with an excellent all-encompassing documentary on one of my favorite subgenres, the horror anthology. It's called "Tales of the Uncanny" (2020) and even though I've seen nearly every horror anthology ever, it made me want to go back and rewatch them all over again.

This almost needs to go in the "movie confessions" thread, but I finally got around to seeing Bava's "Black Sabbath" (1963) late last night. Crazy that I've seen nearly every horror anthology out there but kept skipping on this one. Especially since it features the "Wurdulak" in one of the stories. I've never read Alexei Tolstoy's original story about this Eastern European version of the vampire, but have enjoyed every cinematic depiction I've seen. I say every, but that really only means "Night of the Devils" (1972)*, "Black Sabbath" (1963), a short scene at the start of "A Serious Man" (2009), "Family of Vampires" (1990), and it could almost be argued the graveyard dream scene in "Fiddler on the Roof" (1971).
*This one is my favorite thus far.

"Apocalypse Clown" (2023) was way better than a movie called Apocalypse Clown should be. Everyone is great in it and there were a number of scenes that had me laughing out loud, but the show stealer is Natalie Palamides as Funzo the scary street clown. I don't know how they got through some scenes without multi-takes, she is so freaking hilarious. If there is a bloopers reel to this movie, I would love to see it.

I've never read Alexei Tolstoy's original story about this Eastern European version of the vampire... This book (that's a link, in case it isn't obvious) contains a pretty good English translation of the source story, along with one about the protagonist's girlfriend back home having a supernatural encounter of her own. Meanwhile, Juniper and I went out to see The Phantom of the Paradise on the big screen last night, MCed by Count Gore DeVol, the WDCA-20 late-night horror host whose show played a major role in permanently deforming my taste during my earliest youth. Man, that was great. Still, much as I love that movie, and have loved it since the night I caught it on MTV (of all places) when I was too young to get any of the jokes, I always have sort of a base-level disconnect with it, since the characters are all battling each other to the grave and beyond over control of such putrid, Muppet-Show-guest-star-ass music*. *As I typed that, I realized that it was literally true, insofar as Paul Williams (who wrote all the Phantom of the Paradise songs) was indeed a guest star on "The Muppet Show."

The Return of the Living Dead a perfect Halloween night viewing. That would be a great view for Halloween! "The Return of the Living Dead" somehow manages to capture the scares, thrills, sexiness, comedy and just plain fun of Halloween, even if it isn't specifically about Halloween.
So, last year was Ed Wood's "Night of the Ghouls" on Halloween night. All I can say is, don't let anybody tell you that that isn't a terrific Halloween night choice, because I had a blast with that on in the background while handing out candy. This year - on a last minute whim - I went with "Night of the Living Dead" (1968). Another fine choice to have on while handing out candy, and since I've seen it several time previously, it's not like I was missing any of the finer points. Unlike "Night of the Ghouls", it's such a great movie that, had I not seen it before, answering the door now and then would have been annoying, Halloween or no.

The 1988 Golan/Globus version of "Hansel & Gretel" last night. Of course, it's always great seeing David Warner in anything, and Cloris Leachman is horrible as Griselda (and by that I mean perfect).

I'd avoided watching it recently because one of the actors ended up being a sex offender. But I decided one viewing would be acceptable.

The Retirement Plan Nic Cage John Wicks it up in the Caymans. I suspect movies like that film in gorgeous locales just to enjoy the gorgeous locales.
Meanwhile, I've only seen one of this year's blockbusters ("Guardians of the Galaxy 3").

"Suitable Flesh" (2023) late last night. I wanted to like it. It's loosely based off a Lovecraft short story ("The Thing on the Doorstep") and features the scriptwriter for stuff like "Reanimator", and Brian Yuzna is a producer, along with Barbara Crampton (producing and acting). Heather Graham and Judah Lewis were both good. It just felt too much like one of those cheesy USA Up All Night-type erotic thrillers from the early 90's era. I'd probably give it a 4-out-of-10, which is lower than the 5.4 score it gets on the IMDb.

Count Gore DeVol was a regular at several of the earlier Pensacons. Always great chatting with him at the con. I always made a point of purchasing one of his DVD-r's of episodes from his show.

Short Circuit a military robot becomes self aware, hijinks ensue. Have you ever seen "Deadly Friend" (1986)? Dumb android fun from the same era.

At long last! How did it hold up? Quite well. It's not a patch on ED2 but it has many, many fine moments.
