A representative of our finance department came to the all-staff meeting and explained sorrowfully that in spite of all the other things we are best at in our agency -- like client outcomes, financial solvency, stuff like that -- we are the worst in our 4-county affiliation, and possibly the worst in the state at signing our progress notes. She explained how not having notes written and signed makes it look to the auditors as if we were not doing any work at all (unsigned notes are invisible to them) so they see that and cut our funding. Suddenly I understand why we get that printed report every month saying "this is how many billable contacts you had this month, and this is how long on average it took you to sign them."
Here's the deal about me and progress notes: I sign them the same day unless the power's out so the damned things are done. I hate being backed up on my work. Except for a single time I forgot to write a note for a whole week, I've never gone more than 2 days. Well, apparently the average around here is more like 2 weeks to a month. This makes me the best of the worst.
I happen to know my immediate boss, a disorganized flibbertigibbet who seems unable to handle much of anything, is 2 years behind on her employee evaluations, MONTHS behind on her notes and is on a corrective action plan for it with her own new boss. As CAFAS supervisor I know she has been more than 6 months behind on some of those. (A CAFAS score takes about 5 minutes to complete, once every 3 months per client. It's practically nothing in terms of time and effort.) So I feel vindicated in knowing she should not have been hired on as supervisor ahead of me, because she can't even manage her own caseload, never mind wrangle the rest of the team.
I felt even more vindicated this morning at a morale committee meeting when she admitted she doesn't even know how to use PayPal. "My husband does that for me," she said as if that were perfectly all right. She told me years ago he also gives her an allowance.
I feel so competent right now.
