Except in Lake Wobegon, where all the gay people are above average.

Funny bit, although Netflix were way far from the first network to do cinematic television. I don't know what she's specifically referring to either, so I may be missing some context.
For what it's worth, David Lynch explicitly stated that he thought of his Showtime-aired Twin Peaks revival as a (roughly) sixteen-hour film.

I think the element you're missing is that before Netflix, people didn't normally binge-watch TV shows, even if they owned them on some home-video medium that would technically have put it within their power to do so. Also, before Netflix, individual episodes of television shows were almost universally constructed so as to be satisfying to watch individually, whereas most Netflix originals that I've tried to watch are reduced to utter nonsense if you attempt to take them one episode at a time.

Ah, that does make more sense now. I was coming from a place of being really resistant to the idea that these streaming services are responsible for the cinematization of television. Granted, they are good repositories for new offerings, but the pioneering work had already been done by the time they came along.

I have to say I fear for the future of this thread what with all the ridiculous going on at Twitter this week. The latest update I heard was that all the employees quit en masse.

Yeah, the new owner is acting like a real twat. I'm sure something will come along to replace it, should he literally drive Twitter into the ground.
