...fried up in the fat from a whole pack of bacon... Good lord. When I think about it, it's about the same amount of fat called for in the original recipe. It said to brown the corn kernels in half a stick of hot butter. At least in my version, quite a bit of the bacon fat came out of the frying pan and got discarded before I added the meat to the finished soup. The soup is still 90% fiber.

Today I got up 3 hours early for a goddamm fucking school meeting that won't make any difference. So I got hungry fir lunch early and got to the diner well before the lunch rush. IDK what could have happened but I just got what I've usually been ordering lately, and they double-decked everything. Huge-ass scoop of mashed potatoes looming over TWO country-fried steaks, swimming in enough gravy to float the Titanic. It's 9 pm and I'm still not hungry yet.

Juniper made bacon-wrapped stuffed dates last night. Big, fat-ass Mexican dates with the pit-holes filled with cream cheese (the latter seasoned with sumak, green Palestinian za'atar, dried flakes of some North African chili pepper I'd never heard of, and a dab of rose-tinctured harissa paste*), each wrapped in a rasher of bacon, and the whole mess baked in an iron skillet at 410 degrees for just long enough to get the bacon firm but not crispy. Originally, they were supposed to have chopped walnuts mixed in with the cream cheese, but she forgot about that step. Not a big deal, because the goddamned things came out so rich as it was that neither one of us could eat more than three of them alongside the buttered naan that she served them with.
*The seasonings all came from a massive box of Middle Eastern cooking ingredients that Juniper's sister sent her for her birthday last week. We're going to have a lot of fun figuring out how to use all this shit.

I baked this weekend for the raffle. One delicious-sounding pie (maple walnut) seemed to call for an overly hot oven so I turned it down lower, and it still got incinerated only halfway through the baking time. I peeled off the top layer of cinders and, yuppers, it's delicious. Luckily, the chocolate cake I'd already made came out OK and I just said fuck it and made a dozen of my never-fail oatmeal cookies.

This year I am freaking determined to win something in the raffle, so I paid $40 for 24 tickets. They went towards the triple-berry pie from the Grand Traverse Pie Company, the 3D printed Andean death whistle, the chocolate bomb brownies, the Almond Joy cookies and the orange sugar cookies if I'm remembering everything. My own Oatmeal Cookies of the Gods smelled so wonderful that I also put 2 tickets down on those.

This appears to have been a total success. Please note that every single orange slice is still in place after I had to slam on the brakes & the cake slid off the car seat and landed upside-down on the floor. The person who won the cake in the raffle also ate it without going to the hospital.
