The MST3K Thread

Last week, I started recording the MST3K episodes shown on Comet, two in succession.

Up until that point, the episodes had started at 10 PM, and with the extra 15 mins of commercials, the second one at 12:15 AM.

Well, this week, with a long block of Hammer Horror TV shows, the first MST3K episode is at 10:30, and the second at 12:45 AM.

No problem with me sleeping thru the episodes since I am taping them on obsolete VHS.

I am not planning to watch the feature films now, but the begining and ending sequences, along with the "host" parts, and the shorts, when there are shorts.

Last week, the first feature was Attack of the Giant Leeches, and the short, an episode of the serial, Undersea Kingdom, preceded the feature film, and went on a very long time, even being interruupted by a commercial break.

The second episode was Ring of Terror, and I especially did not want to watch that film with the loud, nonstop, fast talk of Joel and the 'bots, because I had not seen that feature before. Ring of Terror had that blue tint to it that some viewers have noted, and, it was a bleary, blurry print, which was too dark.

The short, an episode of The Phantom Phantom Creeps serial with Bela Lugosi and that odd looking Robot, was one I had not seen before, and again the picture quality was not good.

I think it was in the second MST3K episode, Ring of Terror, that Joel was wearing a green jump suit, although I don't know if the opening theme song had the lyrics changed from "a red jump suit," or not.

Well, for anyone who took the time to read this post, thanks for doing so. I'll keep reporting on my MST3K viewings, until I loose interest in the show

It's such bitter irony that I HAD a big reference book on the show (which I picked up for a song at a thrift), and have long since passed it off to someone who I thought might appreciate it more.  I can't even recall who it was now.

Dr. Kobb, it was probably to myself, and I can assure you that I do appreciate it "more."

I have found the book very a very useful aid in my watching of MST3K.

It was only last year too wasn't it?  God, my poor addled brain...

So, do you have a favorite season of MST3K?  I seem to enjoy the later ones with Mike and the Bots best.  Some of Joel's later seasons were great, too.  I was fine with the new incarnation.  Wish Netflix had picked up the option for another season.  Or that some other network would take a gamble on it.

Kinga (Felicia Day) was the keynote speaker at the HighEdWeb conference I attended a few years back. Very intelligent, engaging and funny person.

No shorts this week. I watched Phantom Planet FFing thru the commercials and Mike & the 'Bots weren't too distracting, and I could still judge the film as a film, as well as appreciate the riffing.

Hercules Unchained, which I think is a Joel episode was the second one, and I am not sure if I'll watch only the opening and closing and host segments, or the feature, or both. Just Any Way the Wind Blows.

Deeky, I also have the Dark Shadows Project, with all of those DVDs that Dr. Kobb sent to me in July of 2019.

It was a load of how many DVDs?

100 or so?

I found 20 DVDs with Dark Shadows episodes from the early 1967 days when Jason McGuire and Barnabus Collins were the 2 Big Villans but Barnabus changed that to himself being the One And Only Main Villian when Barnabus strangled Jason.

The episodes continue thru 1968, with the time travel to the late 1700s, then a bunch of 1969-1970 episodes with the supposedly HP Lovecraft inspired Leviathan story, which has one very campy character in it, and this story line, said to have really ruined the show's ratings, is very boring. A new villian named Blake, (surname) has come along to replace Barnabus, who has been temporarily cured of his vampirism, but contiues to have relapses, and he is no longer really a villian, but this new character Blake, is one bad mutha shut yo' mouth-er. The DVDs finally end with the show's final year, 1971, where the parallel time room in Collinwood is discovered.

Those are quite a lot of episodes to identify episode numbers and first telecast dates on, but I have done a great job, and looking over my work, I am surprised at what a Masterful job I have done.

One problem I have not quite mastered is that a handful of the DVDs give very poor to no playback.

I bought a cleaning machine to deal with this problem, and it has greatly helped with quite a few of the problem DVDs, but a few, maybe 3 total, still are stubbornly resisting reapir, but when you've got a Fanatic with a Cause like myself, working on a problem the chances are good I can get the problem solved.

Brother Dave Gardner called himself a Fanatic Without a Cause, and if you go to the last entry on the Billy's Favorite music Videos thread Gene Cotton sings of being lost and lonely without a Cause.

But, Billy A Anderson is a Fanatic with not A Cause, but Many Causes.

Got to get to work so I can earn my next paycheck, the Numnber One Cause I have to work on.

From last week's MST3K double feature: Now watching the Starfighters, hosted by Mike. A boring film, which I have yet to find any positive reviews of.
