Is that all the reading you do, or do you own a tablet or something? That's about all I read. I'm getting more reading in with retirement. So far mostly just trivia selections from that Edward R. Hamilton order some months back.
I pretty much only do the fanzine anymore, and write it in the same conversational tone I use on message boards. This is literally how I talk. On the rare occasion I do take on a creative writing assignment or an article for someone else's zine, I absolutely find that my writing is better if I've been doing some quality reading beforehand.
Some professional writers are so talented at their craft, I have to take breaks after a couple of paragraphs just to appreciate the skill involved when reading their work. The science fiction author Alfred Bester comes immediately to mind, but there are plenty of others. I just loaned out a book Killer G sent me called Everything is Going to Kill Everybody, by a writer for Cracked.com (if memory serves). I was super-hesitant to loan it out, because the guy's writing style is hilarious. Hopefully, I'll see it back one day.

As much as your lifestyle differs from mine, Deeks...this I simply cannot fathom. I don't even know what it is, but I suspect the proportion of the population who fall into the one-or-less-a-year (books read) statistic would be just as shocking to you, Killer Goldfish. I think that while there does seem to be a wave of anti-intellectualism running through the populous, that's not the only signifier. I think a lot MORE people may be reading on a daily basis, it's just articles and messages and memes on their phones now.*
Believe me, I feel there's something to enjoying a good book that transcends those fleeting tweets and tik-tocs. I've gotten so wrapped up in novels by the likes of Harry Harrison or Harry Turtledove that it's little different than a vacation getaway (for me).
*I also think a lot of people are just too damn busy trying to make ends meet to afford the time to enjoy a good book. Working double-shifts with a new mouth to feed in the house? That book might as well be kindling to you.

These sad facts are not news to me. I myself -- who read 174 books in 2011 -- later bought a smartphone. So far this year I have read 32 measly books (sob).

Regret to inform that on Sept 4 we all missed National Eat A Second Dessert Day, Newspaper Carriers' Day AND Mouth Guard Day.
That last one is not always on the 4th, but on the first Monday of September, so keep a sharp eye out everyone!

Reminder that tomorrow (Sep 16th) is International Red Panda Day. I want one so bad. It could live in my trees and play with the corgi (I also don't have) in my backyard.

Sept 16th is also National Google.com day. I think you all know what to do. It'd be even better if there was a National Goggles Day.
