I just started reading HIBAKUSHA and already learned something. I had no idea that the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs were different designs with different materials and different effects. So it wasn't just "fuck you twice." It was more like "fuck you THIS way," and later in the week "fuck you THAT way." It's 50 years old, but The Curve of Binding Energy by John McPhee discusses a lot of scary stuff, including how one might build a bomb. Further, it discussed the possibility of a terrorist attack on the twin towers...

Well, the new iPhone 14 just made it a tad more difficult for horror writers to offer up plausible plots for stranding characters in the middle of nowhere.
Apple adds satellite emergency service feature to iPhone 14 Sofia Pitt, CNBC Apple announced a long-rumored capability to connect its iPhone 14 series to satellites for emergency services during its event on Wednesday, through a partnership with Globalstar The feature is designed to connect an iPhone 14′s antennas directly to a satellite, to send a message in areas unconnected by cell towers. Apple’s manager of satellite modeling and simulation Ashley Williams said an algorithm in the phone compresses text messages to a size that will “take less than 15 seconds to send” to a satellite, before its relayed to a ground station and on to an emergency service provider.

I just learned at a training that during the Covid pandemic, the Costco 2 miles from my place was the #1 sales outlet for alcohol in the entire country.
Costco, where you go to buy a 55-gallon drum of vodka instead of the piddly little gallon jug.

Also, they start their associates at something like 4-5 times what Wallyworld/Sam's Club kiddos make.
For that alone I'd consider purchasing bulk rocket fuel from them, consequences otherwise be damned.
Still, I'm surprised it wasn't a Meijers...

I'm not sure what you're disagreeing with here, Lemuel. I didn't say anything about how much they pay their people or how much they profit per unit sold. I'm talking about how much alcohol they sold during the pandemic, period dot. Even if you prefer Meijer's selection you are unlikely to be able to afford two or three of their full-size shopping carts full of tequila. At Costco, YES YOU CAN! Even though their carts are 50% bigger AND you can load up one of those wheelbarges instead if you like. Finest Kirkland blended malt rotgut in the 50-gallon Squidmas case.

Miz Murder, I was merely commenting that multi-gallon drums of ethanol are not actually available at Costco. Them being still capitalist and all (alas). Having chosen the Kirkland Mafia as my preferred rotgut supplier in spite of this unfortunate fact, I confess I somewhat self-consciuosly blathering on about my justification for doing so. Today I discovered that it is quite possible -- in fact, easy -- to kill someone with Visine. ![](http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film5/blu-ray_reviews_67/x_man_with_the_x-ray_eyes_blu-ray_/850_man_with_x-ray_eyes_13_blu-ray_.jpg) ![](https://www.sensesofcinema.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/X.4-750x400.jpg)

My impaired brain had forgotten that badminton "birdies" are actually called "shuttlecocks". Don't expect it to process this whole left-wing/right-wing schism.
I do know a weird other little tidbit about badminton. I read once that it's the second fastest sport in the world. I think behind jail-lai if memory serves (and it rarely does anymore).

Ir never crossed my own tiny little mind that anyone might still be making badminton birds with real feathers. I have only ever seen the plastic kind.

I used to take karate lessons from Cheryl Wheeler and another instructor/surfer-turned stuntperson named Joe Buck back in high school. I just found out about her demise last night while catching up with old friends from hs. Crazy.

There are professional corn holers, and the corn holing world has been rocked by a cheating scandal.
How the heck do you cheat at anal sex?

There are professional corn holers, and the corn holing world has been rocked by a cheating scandal. How the heck do you cheat at anal sex? Link us to an article, for Scrod sakes! Today I learned watching a pre-Covid episode of DR. G that the effects of obesity kill about 300,000 people yearly in the USA. One wonders how much that changed when Covid came along. It's the mostly likely condition that will land you in the ER or ICU if you catch Covid...

Just under 3 months after I brought Li'l Dagora home, the dashboard display told me the battery was getting low in my fob. So I went in today, gritting my teeth because the salesgirl told me a new battery would cost me $30. OK, they charged me under $7, so I learned that was wrong, but the real wonderment arrived when he pulled the fob apart AND THERE WAS A CAR KEY INSIDE. I looked and, yes, there is in fact a place to put a key in the door. Not in the steering column that I can see, but...! I had no idea.

Still fumbling around finding out new things about it. I like to think that at some point I'll have the opportunity to break open the book and really get to know my VW.
