Something I've learned over the years living down here is: yes, the fauna can be fierce, but it's hot and the critters have no more desire to expend any undue energy biting/stinging you than you do to antagonize them. When we moved down here from Maryland eons ago, I kept getting bitten by the fire ants. Little fuckers hurt, too. You wouldn't think it was an ant on first chomp. Sometimes, I'd feel one crawling on my leg or arm and reflexively slap at it. That would usually earn me sudden bites from the other three that happened to be scaling the giant. I learned later that they do have a habit of attacking en masse if one of their own is injured.
But the vital lesson I learned (from some past substandard living conditions) is to just live with bugs if you're going to be a Floridian. I don't immediately freak out if i feel something on my leg now. As far as the fire ants go, they are all over the cat's food dish when I go out to change it every morning. I pick the dish up and casually blow the panicked little troopers off and I can't even remember the last time I got bit by an angry fire ant.

Something I find interesting about that taxonomy is that only the Lost Generation were actually referred to by those names in their own time. These were the poor bastards who came of age just in time to get fed into the meat grinder of World War I. Because of the way military recruitment and conscription worked in those days, it was possible for entire villages to be emptied of fighting-age men in order to constitute a single battalion- or regiment-sized unit-- and because of the industrial-scale massacre machines defending the trenches on the Western Front, it was possible for entire regiments to be exterminated in a single infantry charge. As a consequence, there were locales where a whole generation of men was literally lost, and as you might imagine, the phenomenon was much remarked on in the press during the 1920's and 1930's. "Greatest Generation," in contrast, entered currency only in 1998, when it was the title of a book by Tom Brokaw. That seems to have gotten the whole ball rolling with regard to giving retroactive names to past generations, as if to put them on equal conceptual footing with Baby Boomers and Generation X. Also worth noting: You can tell that graphic dates to sometime between 2009 and 2016, because Donald Trump and Joe Biden don't appear on it. And how weird is it that the Silents finally get a president only after four successive Boomers in the White House? |
