Thought I'd toss out some thoughts about the various kinds of meat substitutes I've been eating over time.
I bought one package of stir fry vegetables and one of strips of seitan (I think) masquerading as Korean-style beef, and it was very satisfying, as well as being incredibly easy. The latter is quite successful. You have to realize that the "beef" is like what you get in cheap Chinese take-out, so it's not steak-y, but it has a beefy flavor and the texture is pretty close.

Not surprisingly, plant-based meat is often most successful when it mimics products that are themselves instances of meat being modified to be something else, e.g., sausages. I have had a lot of success with breakfast sausages, with almost all of the brands I've tried being rather successful in regard to tasting like breakfast sausage. However, there is still a matter of texture, with some being a bit mushier than one would wish. The two best I've had, complete with the snap you expect when you bite into a sausage product, came from Morningstar Farms and Trader Joe's. Ironically, TJ's seems to have discontinued that product, while other, less successful brands remain. *sigh*
