I've had this beast for over a week now, and I gotta say - dogs are exhausting. Every time I get up or enter a room she's, "Is this it? Is this where we start the big adventure together?". Me: "I'm just refreshing my coffee, Harlow. Relax."

The Time: Christmas Day, some year between 2001 and 2003.
The Place: The living room of my parents' house.
I'm sitting on the sofa, talking with both of my grandfathers. TJ-- my brother's dog, an unholy admixture of Chihuahua and some hole-digging, rat-hunting breed, somewhat resembling a cat-sized pit bull with a disproportionately tiny muzzle and a buttock-shaped cranium, no two of whose teeth point in quite the same direction-- struts in from the kitchen, and lies down on the floor in front of us. A moment later, all conversation sputters to a baffled halt as TJ begins sucking his own wang with prodigious enthusiasm.

I gotta admit, this total "I WOULD DIE FOR YOU, MAN!" dog energy takes some getting used to after years of felines. I find it very trying, honestly. I detest sycophancy in humans, and putting an extra pair of legs and a fur coat on it renders it only slightly more appealing. |

That is, the dog may fill a deep need for some humans. Mainly those who maybe need to have someone or some pet they can lord over and receive constant adulation. I am still a cat person. I spend some quality time with the cat a couple of times a day and we're good. Dog wants to be right there with me all day. It's kind of sweet I guess, but I wish she'd take it back a notch. It's like okay. We're here. You are always going to be loved and cared for. You don't need to slobber over me every time you see me like we've been apart for months. |

And I'm happy to announce that the dog door is installed and baby picked up on it instantly. Now she can come and go in the big fenced in backyard whenever she wants/needs to.
