Went ahead and got my yearly holiday horror out of the way with "Deadly Games" (1989). It's a really tweaked French Christmas flick and I'm not sure how it gets the high marks it gets on the IMDb. This boy genius lives with his Mom and Grandpa in a humongous mansion. Mom owns one of the top toy retailers and is going to be there late for their big Christmas eve sales. Meanwhile, this crazed looking dude has gotten a job there playing Santa for the kids. Mom fires the guy for upsetting a little girl, and crazy dude finds out where she lives and goes after the son. Parts are holly jolly, parts are grim, parts are funny. Hard to categorize this thing. Apparently, the director threatened to sue the producers of the movie "Home Alone" for plagiarizing his ideas (the kid spends quite a bit of time defending their huge-ass home from the crazed Santa). Tonally, this thing is all over the place, and not in a good way. Still probably better than the pile of holiday horrors I haven't seen. In over two decades of watching these things, I'm down to the dregs.

I'm hearing good things. Alas, I missed my shot at seeing it over the weekend or on a Tuesday cheap-seats show. I'm hoping it will stick around into next week at the theaters. My nephew told me it's doing decent box office.
I saw an advanced trailer for the next Kongzilla movie and was not impressed. I guess it depends on one's Godzilla preferences. To wit:

By the way - is anyone else's favorite Godzilla the literal original?

By the way - is anyone else's favorite Godzilla the literal original? Millions of people feel that way...Are you talking with or without Raymond Burr?

What I mean is, it's crazy to me that the guy/suit Gojira is still the best looking after 70ish years.

By the way - is anyone else's favorite Godzilla the literal original? It's probably the only one that is true art. As an allegory for the consequences of nuclear war. Just in from "Godzilla: Minus One" and can attest that it too is true art. Mainly because they knew to tell a compelling human story AND include some city-stomping Godzilla mayhem, too. Brilliant acting, impressive effects, far from my favorite-looking Godzilla. But hey, you can't win `em all. I'm probably not near the kaiju fan most here are, but apart from "Godzilla: King of the Monsters!" (1956), this is probably my new favorite Godzilla. There's some nice odes to the original, too. Lots of crowds running away in sheer terror, monorail gets chomped, little line of tanks ineffectually blasts away, and some orchestrations are a cozy homage to the original. Didn't think I'd ever get choked up watching a Godzilla flick, but they got to me a couple of times.

This intriguing documentary on David Hamilton Grant. Truth told, I knew next to nothing about the fellow prior. One of the interviewees refers to him as "the most notorious director ever" a couple of times, which may be overdoing it a bit. Perhaps "most notorious British director ever"?

Watched "Impuratus" (2022) a couple of nights ago. Didn't make a lick of sense. And the impossibly old prisoner making the deathbed confession looked too much like Beetlejuice to take seriously. Sadly, one of the last roles for Tom Sizemore. I like Lew Temple, but his attempt at a Civil War era Yankee accent was lacking.

2h 14m? Jesus. Some movies need to learn less is more.

2h 14m? Jesus. Some movies need to learn less is more. I don't get that either. Old Hollywood could tell the whole fall of the Roman Empire in 80 minutes. These mf's couldn't tell a coherent deathbed story in under two hours.

"Boy and the Heron" (2023) last night. Not the first time I've been left confused/bemused by a Studio Ghibli film. I don't know if it was cultural differences or what, but both of us were , "Wut?" afterwards.

Finally got around to "Prey" (2022). I'd heard nary a bad thing about it, and now I see why. Really great addition to the Predator franchise.
