I suppose it makes some sense that I should resurrect this old thread. Rather than retread over the all old information, I'll just link the current version of my essay of the subject of Ed D. Louie's HIM (which IIRC includes a link to the old thread). As is stated in said essay, I fully encourage people to get in touch if they have any useful information in the hunt for this obscure slice of film history. Well, recently someone did. Subject: HIM Showing in Amsterdam in the 70s-80s Message: "Hi. I recall seeing at least the confession and crucifixion scenes of the film 'HIM;, but probably more of this movie somewhere between 1979 and 1985 in the Amsterdam gay scene in a small gay porn theater setting. I don't know precisely where, but it was either at Le Bijou, Spuistraat, Le Salon, Nieuwendijk 22, Beate Uhse Twin Cinema, or the movie space of the long defunct Viking Disco (Later Havanna Bar) in the Regulier Dwarsstraat. I have seen several films copied to VHS there, so it could very well be a VHS version, but I also remember hearing a reel rattling in the back in those places in the earlier years. I was a young university student from the Caribbean at the time, and at the time I was very impressed by those scenes, as I recall now." It's a bit of a hard tip to verify, but it's certainly nice to know that there are still fresh leads to follow. I'll continue to update the essay link in this post as new revisions get made.

DoubleU thanks for the update and for starting a new thread on this topic. I did check Krakenslayer's To Obscurity and Beyond, and also noticed that the email had been posted most recently on that board, too.

Just looking at the numbers of films, I don't see a much likelyhood that HIM would be in the Kinsey Institute's film and video collection. But, since I have the link, I'm putting it here for my own future searches, as well as anyone else who wants to give it a try. kinseyinstitute.org/collections/film-video/index.php

Choco, while I don't really expect to find HIM on either of those two links, searching the web pages probably would benefit me by increasing my knowlege of porno films.
But,I'm just so lazy i don't want to do it right now. I'd rather take a drink of alchol.

OK, Folks, I put my Laziness on the shelf, and started my first serious search of the Kinsey Institute's holdings for HIM. Look on the left, and you'll see there are 10 films and videos with HIM in the title. Right now, I'm on page 3 of no telling how many pages of listings. So far I haven't found a film or video with titled HIM. Here is a link to where I'm temporarily stoppping my search, so I can resume at that point later on. iucat.iu.edu/kinsey?page=3&q=HIM&search_field=title&utf8=%E2%9C%93I would encorage and welcome anyone who feels so inclined to click on the link and see what they can find. One possible thing that might slightly be in our favor is that the collection includes video tapes starting in 1970. And, I suppose there is the possibility that Ed D Louie's HIM Could have been put on video in 1974 or in the following years.

Gentlemen, I think we might have something. Taking I quick look, this caught my eye: iucat.iu.edu/kinsey/9123669Description: 1 film reel; 16 mm.
Contents note: "A hand in hand films release" Why is everyone talking about him" (I shouldn't have to point out that this is word-for-word one of the taglines featured in the advertisements in The Village Voice) Good hot stuff Quarterback The tall timber Times Square strip Hot & heavy Passing strangers Adam and Yves The Diary Desires of the devil Curb service Male stampede.
Notes Handwritten label with title. Handwritten note inside indicates the reel has up to 13 short films together.
In relation to the "hand in hand films" credit, I did a bit of searching and found this extract from the 1981 book The Bible on Film: A Checklist, 1897-1980: "HIM - 1974 - Hand in Hand Films - Color"
Perhaps Billy's old theory of Him being chopped up and distributed like that might not be too far out there after all. It's possible that I'm wrong, but I think this might be a good lead. I'm thinking that a portion of Him may have been chopped off into the short featured here. Someone writing out the titles on the film canister may have seen the ad in The Village Voice and mistaken the tagline for the full title. I suppose there isn't any way to know for certain outside of obtaining a copy and trying to get a positive identification from Vincent Parrillo, Wakefield Poole, David Tipmore, or someone else who's confirmed having seen it. Although, as someone living outside the United States, obtaining a copy myself may be easier said than done.

DoubleU, thanks for finding that listing before I did. Saved me some work.
Yes, it seems that some part of HIM very well might have survived in the Kinsey collection.
And, this should be considered a major breakthrough in the search for HIM.
And, even if the entire feature is never found, this is better than nothing.
And, there is still the hope that the feature can be found.
Obviously, someone qualified to get an appointment with the Kinsey Institute to view the film has to do just that.
And, considering that HIM is on the list of most sought after lost films, and how great the interest in the film is, I would think there would be some qualified film detective, with the means, who could get an appointment with the Kinsey Institute to view that film you found listed.
Word of this finding just has to be gotten to the right film detective.
I have read all of the rigid rules and regs of the Kinsey Institute on allowing qualified people to view the films, and am I correct in my reading that they would even make a video tape for those qualified poeple? To Keep? Or just to view while they visit the institute?
So, who do we tell about this, in hopes of finding the right person to visit the Kinsey Institue?
The author who wrote the book on missing films, and included HIM in his book?

As you say, Phil Hall seems like a good person to contact. I think I still have his email somewhere. I'll send him a message. Stay tuned.

I'm just hoping that Phil, or whoever the film detective may be who digs this up, can personally forward me a copy. Partly for my own personal curiosity (After all, I've been researching and writing about this film for nearly two full years), and because I have the contact details of Parrillo, Poole, and Tipmore on file. I could easily contact them in order to get a positive ID on the film.

With my laziness still on the shelf, and energized to do some more work, on a lot of things I've been procrastinating on, Last night, I clicked on the link above, and gave it a good searching. I did not find any leads on HIM on that link. The erotic museum in Las Vegas was at one time a partnership effort of Reverend Ted Mcllvenna, a minister of the Methodist Church, who was reputed to have one of the largest porno collections in the world, with one million items. But, Rev. Mcllvenna and his partner in the Las Vegas museum came to a parting of the ways (Rev. Mcllvenna originally had an apparently single proprietership museum in San Francisco), and I don't know where he took his porno collection after that, or if he is even still living. I seem to have read somewhere that Rev. Mcllvenna was recently deceased but cannot find it now. Here's a link to a bio of Rev. Mcllvenna: www.lgbtran.org/Profile.aspx?ID=125I will make finding out Whatever Happened to Rev. Ted Mcllvenna and his humongous porno collection my next major project related to the search for HIM, as we await what DoubleU might learn from Phil Hall, although once again, anyone else who can find out about Rev. Mcllvenna's porno collection before I do, please do so. There's enough work on this project for more than one person, in fact many more people.

Ted was quoted in one interview as saying that his biggest habit was playing golf. He must have had a lot of energy and motivation to do all that he did do in his life, however.

While the link below is 21 years old, it still is a starting place to learn about how big a porno collection Ted Mcllvenna has, or had. And, I would think it might have included a print of HIM, if we can still possibly get an inventory of Mr. Mcllvenna's collection. There is also an "images" link for Rev. Mcllvenna's collection, or his museum. www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/4710272/The-porn-again-minister.html

Doing a bit of digging, it seems Hand in Hand Films released 8mm copies of some of their features as mail orders. I wonder if ' Him' could perhaps be among them... [The Village Voice - March 21, 1974]

[The Village Voice - March 21, 1974]I had noticed that in the ads and wondered about it too. Maybe someone somewhere has a copy of the Hand In Hand 8mm mail order films list. Maybe the Kinsey Institute?
