I can't help noticing that the pizza joint is in Highland Park -- until recently a cratered area being gentrified by Middle Easterners, restoring it to its former glory as one of the grandest metro Detroit neighborhoods -- and Hamtramck is Polish giving way to more Middle Easterners. I just wonder who typed that in...

Paczki are (after my wife and vodka) the third-greatest gift of the Polish nation to the world. Paczki Day is the day when the people of the great state of Michigan (including many who are NOT Polish) prove that Louisiana can't brag about that silly Mardi Gras business. For in New Orleans, they have only beignet....a feeble, undersized, Frenchified imitation of the One True Fried Pastry. Behold:

I can feel arteries clogging just LOOKING at them. I wonder if they can be mailed? I have had beignets though and they are sooo good!

They're filled with various jellies, and are made with a lot more eggs and lard than your average jelly roll. The number one traditional flavor is prune for some reason, but you also see a LOT of apple filling, though my favorites are lemon or raspberry. They come both glazed like this, or just covered in powdered sugar, and I mean covered. They're your basic "Cabinet emptier" food for Fat Tuesday.
