So, as a proud homeowner, I joined this online thing called Nextdoor where neighbors can talk about local issues, ask for renovator recommendations, find homes for pets and so forth. NextDoor, AKA Why Is There A Black Person In My Neighborhood?

NextDoor, AKA Why Is There A Black Person In My Neighborhood? I wasn't aware it had that sort of rep. I've used it to hook up with someone to toss frisbee; let neighbors know I was open for trick-or-treating Halloween eve; and helped someone name their new kitten.

Which caste of nerddom was this? Skincon! Where skinsuit fetishists hold panel discussions about getting stains out of lycra! Showing up in the background of local news casts! the pros and cons of various materials! ...and so forth.

I literally cannot tell if that is a joke or not.

Actually, Penguicon, which I've been going to for like five years now, encompasses anything you can nerd about. It started out as a linux con (ie their mascot is a penguin) decades ago, and being "open source" they slowly let people expand the purpose of the con, so now you can attend and find anything from computers to cooking, from cosplay to writing, from lockpicking to fandom discussion, from games to yes, sex talk. Plus of course plenty of partying and drunken revelry. I hosted a panel talking about the Video Nasties period of history, and was also in charge of the retro video game room this year.

Here's a quick video of this year's Penguicon. Seems a large amount of footage was shot right outside my retro game room (where the sign about asteroids and planetary defense being moved is). At 2:06, the lady waving is my good friend Bagel who was in charge of programming this year.

Well shit. I've been running Linux systems for two decades now. How did I miss such wondrous geekery?

It's like you heard "Linux" and immediately stopped paying attention to the rest of my message lol.

That's not an unreasonable response.

It's like you heard "Linux" and immediately stopped paying attention to the rest of my message lol. It's more like I'm thumping myself for not realizing all the other kinds of excellent nerdery I could have enjoyed all these years.

Best title I've found today on Goodreads:
"21 days in the wilderness: A 21 day violent prayers and fasting plan for breaking demonic bandages, healing, freedom from demonic oppression, financial ... marriage (Overcoming Demonic Activities)"
It gets funnier every time I read it.

I would have attended your talk on the Video Nasties. Also, it's interesting how conventions can change focus over the years. The actual original convention here in P'cola is one called Paracon, and it's held at the Fairgrounds, literally right across from where I work. it was at first more of a paranormal/new age focused event, but over time it has morphed into Pensacon: The Summer Edition.

Thanks, yeah it went very well. My co-panelist was a guy I recruited from within the con facebook group that's a local writer of gonzo horror (he has a book of short fiction called "Sex, Gore, and Millipedes" for example) who has very strong feelings about censorship that I think was a good choice. Regarding con changes, I've already started rallying people to bring more horror panels and activities to the con as there was very few this year contrasting worthwhile demand. It's funny, in doing so I've had someone suggest I look into this different open ended convention in October that apparently has a sci-fi/fantasy lit slant to it but is just as open to other topics of nerdery. Wheels within wheels...
