And the worst part is, "defund," in this case, doesn't mean what it means when they're doing it to all those programs. In this case, it means shifting funding because you're shifting responsibility, putting other people in charge of the things that police really shouldn't have been doing in the first place, something the cops themselves have repeatedly said they want to happen. That Repug list is just shit they've cut because they don't think government has any role to play in improving society. |

One option different places are considering is simply tearing all the staffs down to the ankles and starting over, essentially firing everyone and making them reapply without the protection of the police unions which have allowed them to sweep past misbehavior under the rug. Some of them, I hope -- the John Balcerzaks and Derek Chauvins -- will not make it back in. And new officers would be starting at the lowest end of the pay scale so that would save them money for years to come. And maybe they just need to give all the tanks and rocket launchers back to the National Guard, for shit sakes. Hell, sell it back. |
