Memories of a time and place I'd just as soon not: Once upon a time the school Marxo Grouch and I went to took us all on an overnight trip to (I think) New Jersey. We ended up being hosted by a Roman Catholic retreat, and I ended up sharing a room with the kid who was generally thought of as the "bruiser tough guy" in our class. He was freeked by the crucifix on the wall over our beds: "I don't like that thing up there, it's creepy" --me (still a more-or-less believer at that time) "Hey it's just Jesus, he can't harm you" "Yeah, but I don't want him looming over me in my underpants..."

I've tried every way I know and can't get the image to post. But you must read it. Everybody everywhere must read it. flic.kr/p/71QfcU

Since the candles are supposed to start brand new and burn all the way down each night of Hanukkah, I'm not sure how this even became a question...

What if you were drizzling the molten wax onto your sub's body straight from the menorah, during your Hanukkah observance? Not a rabbi. Not even Jewish, though I have a limited familiarity with Judaism. So I have not a fucking clue, and the next bit is a mix of serious thought and humor: I'm thinking in an orthodox or conservative congregation that'd be right out. I don't think a reform rabbi wouldn't sign on either, though the lecture might be different. If you're in a reconstructionist congregation, you might have a range of opinions from "No" to "Sure, why not?" --and, possibly, "What's a menorah?" More seriously, folks: a mitzvah means to fulfill one of the 613 commandments of Jewish law. Pretty sure there's no commandment concerning drizzling hot wax on anybody (sorry kids!). The broader sense of mitzvah as a "good deed" implies fulfilling a commandment, so no luck there either. Safe/Sane/Consensual seems like the guiding principle, but that's strictly secular.

I can't believe youse are actually discussing this.
