Abnd Nov 23rd is apparently National Fibonacci Day. I'm open to suggestions as to what rituals should accompany that one. That's also my birthday. I'll be drinking. OK, but does that celebrate the Fibonacci Sequence in any way? I mean, do you drink 2 shots, then 4, then 8...?

It's National Chia Pet Day. I have no idea how to celebrate that short of purchasing a chia pet.

IT'S NEARLY SQUIDMAS KOBBERS I was done fighting the crowds/ordering holiday stuff months ago. Hell, those Chinese finger puppets (see recent purchases thread) are meant for next Halloween!
Do need to go ahead and get some cards out though.

The Three Facts of Ninjas
1. Ninjas are mammals. 2. Ninjas fight ALL the time. 3. The purpose of a ninja is to flip out and kill people.

A mostly postal friend sent me these notes from her deep dive into "Berchta", whom I was completely unaware of prior:
Happy Krampus day and the origin of his female counterpart
December 5th was the traditional day that Krampus roamed looking for disobedient children. He didn't come on Christmas Eve like Santa. He cleared the way for Santa. He got rid of all the bad kids--avoid any confusion for the jolly old elf. Krampus was not alone in his efforts to cull the undeserving. He had a female counterpart Frau Perchta, who played clean up. Any children who were able to front for Krampus well enough to get a gift from Santa, but then slacked off were fair game for her. She gave you until January 6th to get all your work for the season done--time enough to celebrate, sober up and get back to work. If you came up lacking, then when she visited, she would slit open your stomach as you slept, remove your innards and fill the gaping wound with rocks and straw. Why? Because as terrifying as being murdered in your sleep is, the thought that your corpse would also be defiled was just the cherry on top. She didn't just take care of lazy children, but lazy wives as well who have not cleaned up their homes after all the festivities. No leaving the Christmas tree up until February with her around. She actually does the world a great service. We all get caught up in the holidays to one degree or another and it can be hard to get back to normal life--not to mention all those New Year's resolutions that are so ephemeral and easily forgotten. Perchta is there to help you keep your promises and get back on track. This, however, is not how Perchta started out. In the beginning her name was Berchta. She was the goddess of the "in between places". She represented the mysterious and the hidden. She would lead souls to the underworld and was a protector of the weak and powerless--in particular children lost before they had been baptized. She was known as "the Lady in White" and stood equal to her male counterpart, and even help to lead the Wild Hunt itself. She was the source of the rumblings in the mountains and women could point to this phenomenon as a source of her displeasure. Berchta was beloved by her people--mostly women--and was a figure they could rally behind. Her nature was naturally peace loving and gentle, but, if need be, she could change and be as fierce as any male and even take the form of any animal. Berchta was a strict mother figure. She was merciless with the lazy and unruly, but to those faithful to her teachings, she was a source of both hope and comfort. If that is the case, then why is she now depicted as a monster? That U-turn lies with the Catholic church. The church recast her as a monster, changing her name from "Berchta" which means "bright shining one" to "Perchta" which means "monster" and made her the leader of all that is dark and terrible. Why was she targeted so viciously? She was a mighty female figure who bowed before no male deity--they couldn't have that. Then, of course, she was a pagan goddess, and they really couldn't have that. The problem with her is when the church went in and tried to stop people from practicing her rituals, they didn't want to give her up. She was their hero. So, the church transformed her into a figure that could suit their purposes of inspiring obedience but did not garner worship. But they failed. Even as a monster women kept her worship alive. Even if she was a monster, she was their monster. She was respected and feared and maybe through her they could gain just a bit of that for themselves. In modern society she is depicted not only goat footed, but with a giant beak that overshadows her face. Here is a Christmas card depicting her and her followers. This character definitely needs to be a stamp! So while we herald the coming of Krampus today, remember to honor and prepare for the coming of Perchta in January. Hope you are having a wonderful holiday season and thank you Linda Hedges for inspiring this holiday deep dive, M

These are as good as holidays to me:
I always that whole stretch of time off from work, and then do pretty much what it says in the above post. Probably go out to eat a couple times. Might go cash in whatever gift cards I got, if people gave me any of those. Otherwise, though? For those five days, I've got your "being a productive, contributing member of society" right here.

Yeah! And if possible, I may love this post-holidays January dead zone even more than those post-Christmas/pre-New Year's days. It's become my favorite time of the year. Period. Granted, I'm down here, where it just feels cool most nights, rather than dealing with snow and ice hazards like some right now.
