Back in July, I finally went the way of most aging 21st-century fat men, and came down with type II diabetes. My blood sugar concentration when I was diagnosed was in the "how the fuck are you not dead already?" range, and I spent about four days in the hospital.
Obviously that's a weird thing to lead with when posting in the "stuff we're happy about" thread, but most of what I'm happy about won't make much sense unless you know about that.
Anyway, I'm currently happy about four things on the health front:
1. I just got my A1C test results back. (I've never been able to get a coherent explanation of what the test directly measures, but it indicates a person's average blood sugar concentration over the preceding three months.) They're exactly what a normal, non-diabetic person would score. Mind you, it's taken a lot of drugs to get me there, but that's still an extraordinary turnaround.
2. Speaking of drugs, my prescribed insulin dose has been cut by 20%.
3. Operation Stop Being an Enormous Fat-Ass is eight pounds ahead of schedule, which is to say that this week's weigh-in puts me just two pounds over my target weight for December 1st.
4. I managed 500 pounds on the leg-press machine at the gym this week, meaning that I've fully regained at last all the leg strength I lost due to inactivity after I tore up my knee for the second time about two and a half years ago. And that's with a superior range of motion to what I've had for most of my adult life, too.

The A1C test has been explained to me as a measure of the percentage of your red blood cells completely encrusted with excess sugar. Non-diabetics have (IIRC) between 4 and 6% of their blood cells encrusted. Higher than that and you are flirting with trouble. It's good to hear that if you have this, then at least it's the kind you can get rid of.

Well, I haven't so much gotten rid of it as wrestled it into a submission hold. If I stopped applying pressure (stopped taking my meds, resumed eating whatever the fuck I wanted, etc.), those numbers would shoot right back up.

As it happens, I just got diagnosed as pre-diabetic last week, so I'm trying to get that under control before it gets worse.

Frau Caution and I went out to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum to visit a few of my reptilian relations. Most of the critters weren't out, though one of the coyotes did perk up a little as we trotted by. On the way home we stopped at Guillermo's Double L for lunch where, in addition to superb combo plates, we were thoroughly mariachi'ed. It's good to be a lizard in the Southwest, friends. Very good indeed to be a lizard.

1948? That's an impressive run! They MUST be good. 1) Oh yes. 2) No sign of slowing down. 3) This town is home to the longest-running Mexican restaurant in the United States. They're going to be 100 years old in 2022. 4) It is GOOD to be a lizard around here.

But when Operation Stop Being An Enormous Fatass can be stamped "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED," you can be well and truly done with it.

There is a LOT of mariachi in this town. I am not even close to expert enough to judge. Guillermo's Double L is awesome food. No idea if there's some kind of Michelin star system for the Southwest... I'm not sure what the second-oldest Mexican restaurant is, around here. We tend to go wherever we know is good that happens to be close to where we are at the moment...Also, what *kind* of Mexican food are we talking about here? We have several regions represented locally ;)

One nice side effect of my insane health adventure has been a marked drop in appetite, and gaining the habit of working out. I'm lighter than I've been in literal years, nearly down to double digit kilos when I weigh in at dialysis. I'm treating it as a total win for me and as a kickstart to a healthier me.

I think I posted a pic of it a month or three back, but I created a dangling bat-baby from some prop wings and a zombie baby prop from Spirit Halloween that is meant to be mounted as if he's dangling from something. Anyway, a week or so ago I hung him from a tree branch facing the corner I live on, so that maximum traffic would see him passing by. Well, I arrived home tonight to find him sitting on the chair on my porch. I can only imagine that he fell and a thoughtful neighbor brought him to safety*. Whoever it was, bless their Halloween hearts.
*Any other Annabel-type conjectures are too frightening to consider.

So, I still enjoy printing out and sending my goofy movie fanzine every so many months. However, printer inks were becoming downright exorbitant. Then, WM stopped carrying the color inks needed for my old copier. That was worrisome, but I've started just purchasing inks through their website now and can get the same inks for a fraction of the cost. I hope it isn't some great sell-off before they stop carrying them at all, but for now it's certainly much more cost-effective to indulge in this absurd hobby.
