I've mainly heard warnings on the news and grousing from locals about the cold snap, but I for one am loving it. It feels like December is expected to feel like for a change.
I'm well aware that others cross the nation are facing literally deadly cold, and not trying to diminish their experience. To me this is perfect "stay-inside-get-high-and-watch-shit" weather down here at the moment.

Woman asked a question about the produce yesterday. She had an unusual (but insanely sexy) accent, so I asked her where she was from. Turns out she's a Mongolian living in Sweden (and for whatever reason was down visiting our podunk burg).

I took the plunge today and ordered a new furnace. I could have gone with the cheapest option and I almost did, because I'm a cheapskate, but I went with the slightly higher option because the total cost started with a 666.

I didn't want to keep her from her shopping trip, but boy did I have questions.

I got a call from our Sub-overlord while I was still on vacay last week asking whether I had AFLAC shirt-term disability. (Which I now know full well is called STD insurance.) I said yes, same as always and she asked whether I knew it needed to be updated. No, never heard of that. Apparently she hadn't either, and if you don't update your coverage the benefit amount will stay the same no matter how many pay raises we get. She moved mountains to get me an appointment that I could make -- the woman came in early and updated me, giving me a lot more choices than we had back in 2013 and also alerting me to the fact that I make a buttload more money than I thought I did at this job.
So now if I break both my legs or go to a psych hospital for a month or something I will not only get paid, I will get paid more than a thousand dollars more a month than I would have otherwise.
Two other things: the agent has a laptop with a duck's foot on the lid. And she gave me a little plush duck and if you push the button on his back, Gilbert Gottfried says "AFLAC...AFLAC...AFLAC!!!"
She told me that Gottfried got fired less than an hour after he made his insensitive comment about the tsunami -- 70% of AFLAC's business is apparently with Japan -- but even afterward he was still getting paid for the little plush ducks and everything else. So I am content on both of their parts.

Feeling very accomplished right now. In the years since Nick died and took the Schismatics with him, I'd allowed my main bass to languish into such disrepair that it was barely playable. This past weekend, I completely reset the whole thing-- truss rod, bridge height, intonation, new set of strings-- and I've probably played it more since Sunday than I had in the whole back half of 2022. Also, I finally cracked a bit of somebody else's music that had eluded me for a decade, ever since I got the idea into my head that the song might be fun to do as a wildly unexpected cover: the keyboard lead masquerading as a cello lead in Peter Murphy's "Cuts You Up."

I let my guitar sit in my room for many years without touching it. Oddly, when I picked it up again in earnest not all that long ago, I found myself playing better than I ever had when I played it regularly. Also, I could have sworn you told me you hated Peter Murphy.

Also, I could have sworn you told me you hated Peter Murphy. See, that's what would have made it such a terrific cover had I figured it out back when I still had a functioning band-- because I really don't like Peter Murphy, but there's something about that song in particular that... It's hard to explain. I heard "Cuts You Up" somewhere about ten years back, probably for the first time since the turn of the 90's, and my mental DJ immediately cued up an arrangement of it that was faster and harsher and altogether less mopey, with that pseudo-cello figure transposed to distorted-as-fuck bass guitar. Something similar happened with a couple of the songs that Nick chose for when we played the Sidebar's Heavy Metal New Year's Eve back around 2002. I have no desire ever to sit around listening to Motley Crue or Grim Reaper, but "Red Hot" and "See You in Hell" were so much fun to play once I'd finished retooling them that they became semi-regular parts of our repertoire for the next several years.

Yeah, I get that. (Except for the not liking Peter Murphy part.)

After two exhausting fricking weeks I discovered that I am suddenly free all day tomorrow, no strings attached. I have never been so grateful for a chainsaw accident in my life.

I wish I had recordings I could point you toward, but I didn't have the disposable income for studio time during the gubernatorial administration of Bob "Fuck Those Fucking State Employee Tax Moochers!" Erlich, and although Nick briefly put together a pretty sweet home-recording rig the the basement of his mom's house where we rehearsed, it seemed like some element of it was always out of commission for mysterious reasons. Now, of course, I understand that it was because he kept pawning the shit to buy Percocet (and later heroin)...
