(as Choconado knew well). RIP in peace, Choco! Oh dear. So he did in fact pass? I hadn't heard anything for years. Did he never get the transplant he was waiting on? or did it not take?

Watched "Hunter Prey (2010 last night). It's low budget sci-fi that succeeds due to being so well-written. Kept trying to second guess things and the movie would pull the proverbial rug out from under my expectations.
Also a weird one with Bill Paxton called "The Vagrant" (1992). He plays a yuppie making his first house purchase. A creepy vagrant/squatter won't leave him be though. It had some interesting tricks up its sleeve, too.

"Paradise for All" (1982) last night. Amazing film about a insurance salesman who, failing a suicide attempt, agrees to an experimental surgery that focuses on a tiny, specific area of the hypothalamus. He recovers and is perpetually happy/content afterwards. This leads to complications even as he rises to top insurer in his company. Not long after, he discovers others who the doctor has performed the surgery on and since they are also blissed out, they decide to enjoy each other's company as opposed to the regular everyday people filled with worries and concerns. Amazing film which has a Cronenbergian feel at times. Literally one of the best things I've viewed thus far this year.

Been a fan of George MacDonald Fraser's 'Flashman' series of novels for years. Took a while to get around to this 1975 movie version of the second novel "Royal Flash", but it was worth the wait. Besides the suspense, intrigue, and comedy-filled storyline, there are some amazing location shots and from what I could tell, Malcolm McDowell performed some pretty scary stunt work. I'm sure not all of the stunts, but enough pratfalls and scary heights to give pause. I have to admit, I didn't see him in the role going into this, but he does a serviceable job. Oliver Reed is great as the menacing Otto Bismark, and there's a slew of other character actors who fill out the bill. I need to seek out the novels in the series I haven't read yet.

I've read two of the books, and I have to ask, is the movie anywhere near as offensive (not a pejorative in this case, obviously, since it's quite deliberate)?

I've read two of the books, and I have to ask, is the movie anywhere near as offensive (not a pejorative in this case, obviously, since it's quite deliberate)? He's the same coward and womanizer as the novels, but apart from a bare breast or two here and there, it's relatively clean. Florinda Bolkan as Lola Montez screws him over more than he she. Britt Ekland as cold fish Duchess Irma has some hilarious scenes. Especially when he takes her to bed on the eve of their honeymoon.
Man, I was looking into prices on The Flashman Papers, a complete collection of the novels put out a few years back. Guess that will wait.

It was actually good. Not sure about the end, but Shyamalan knows how to craft a decent thriller.

I might watch pictured later:

Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes (2020) last night. A cafe owner discovers the TV in the cafe and the monitor in his apartment upstairs are linked and one is two minutes ahead of the other in time. The whole thing plays out in three rooms and an outside stairway and it's one of the most delightful time travel adventures I've ever seen.
I usually go into time travel movies with a bit of trepidation, because sometimes it (time travel) is just used as a lazy story device. This is worth a look though, and only runs about 70 minutes. Fascinating and funny at times, with likeable characters.

It was interesting. Doesn't paint the best picture of Japan's criminal justice system. But a solid doc.

"Sphere" (1998) last night. I figured it would be topical with all the hubbub about water and air anomalies and the possible government cover-up of such.
