Turns out there's two movies called "The Harbinger" that came out in 2022 and I watched the wrong one last night.

Turns out there's two movies called "The Harbinger" that came out in 2022 and I watched the wrong one last night. There's more than one thing to harbing? Who knew? Well, nobody said that! I found out that there's more than one movie in French called CHOCOLAT and traumatized myself by watching the wrong one. The rest of the movie was just dull but that very first scene, when the guy pizzles by the side of the road, and then without even wiping his hands off collects some ants and sprinkles them on bread and butter to serve to the little girl...guh.

"Soft & Quiet" (2022) a couple of nights ago. So, a group of white's-only women hold an informal meet-&-greet to discuss ideas and actions. After amping each other up on hate-speak and bad ideas, they harass a couple of Indonesian sisters at a small grocers (owned by one of the white women). Even more juiced up on violent rhetoric now, the white women decide to break into the Indonesian woman's house and pull a prank. And things get way WAY out of hand pretty quick.

I watched "Madmen of Mandoras"* (1963) the other night and while the parts where they're carrying around Hitler's head in a jar are indeed pretty silly, the rest of the movie wasn't nearly as inept as expected.
*aka "They Saved Hitler's Brain" later with some extra minutes spliced in.

"A Wounded Fawn" (2022) night before last. I'm afraid much of this went right over my pointy little head. I think it might help if I was better versed on Greek tragedies? Not sure it would have mattered. Interesting as a look inside a damaged brain, anyway.

"Devil Worship: The Rise of Satanism" (1988) last night. Xian documentary from the golden age of satanic panic. Several bands from the era are brought up, like Ozzy, Slayer, King Diamond, and Venom. That last one is weird to me, because I've practically never heard them and know nothing about them (but they kept bringing them up during the doc). I did just download a couple of their tunes and they're pretty great. I wonder why they sort of disappeared?

Saw "The Clapboard Jungle" (2020) last night. Decent documentary on the trials and tribulations of trying to get an indie film made these days.

"The Violation of Claudia" (1977) last night. I love William Lustig's "Maniac", "Maniac Cop", and "Vigilante" movies. So, when I found out he did some porn prior to making these favorites, I was intrigued. I gotta admit, given his mainstream reputation, I was expecting something lurid and violent. So, was surprised at how tender and romantic much of "Violation" was. It even moves into comedy territory when she meets a man into messy sex, and goddamn, that surprise ending got me! Did NOT see that coming.

Oh, I also saw a terrific Netflix 2022 stand-up comedy special by Taylor Tomlinson called "Look At You". I don't recall whether I even finished her first Netflix special from a few years ago, but this newer one she is razor-sharp and flat-out brilliant for a solid 90+ minutes. It's something to behold. Obviously I need to revisit that first one.

"This Place Rules" (2022) documentary last night. fellow was able to get up close and personal interviews with folks like Enrique Tarrio and Alex Jones during the months leading up to January 6th. I'm not sure if this was his intention or not, but the doc did make me realize that many conservatives treat politics like "pro" wrestling.

"The Menu" (2022) is terrific, with gorgeous cinematography. I know she's sort of the "it" girl right now, but Anna Sophia Robb is great, as is Ralph Fiennes, and really everybody top down does a magnificent job.

"Farewell, My Lovely" (1975) has Robert Mitchum as Phillip Marlowe. Don't usually do film noir, let alone tributes to the genre, but this was excellent.

Wait, there are two versions of this epic!? Yep. I'm given to understand that "Madmen" is the original, and someone got rights, added footage, and renamed it "They Saved".

"Stakeland" (2010) was terrific. I was going to say that it must have served as inspiration for "Zombieland", but that actually came out a year earlier.

Finally saw this! So far I haven't been able to bring myself to it. It's not at all what I expected. As usual, people who have tried to summarize the movie in a sentence or two appear to have entirely missed the point of the film. As the story got started I quickly filled with dread, because the characters are such sphincters, but then things went sideways and I was well satisfied. This should be a dang good Cliffie's Note if I survive this friggin' work week and get a chance to write a review.
