Wasn't the while "let's roll" thing debunked anyway? Apparently it was "let's croissant". Really? It wasn't "let's freedom fry"? 🤔

Wasn't the while "let's roll" thing debunked anyway? Actually, being serious for a moment here... Let's say I was on a crosstown bus and some nutjob decided to steer it into the basketball stadium during a big game. Would I try to stop this from happening? Maybe. I mean, I might as easily just sit there paralyzed with fear pissing myself. But, if I could manage to rouse myself to action, I would. Not because I love sportsenings or because I'm a patriotic whatthefuckever, but because you if you know somebody's hell-bent on killing lots of people, you should try to stop them. What's Bob-awful about lionizing these poor folks (whom, I'll grant, had courage --along with the whiteboi arrogance to assume they could make the live/die call on incomplete information for everyone else on the airplane) is they probably were NOT doing anything to "Save Our Freeeeedumbs for Jeeeeebus!" But somebody else made a lot of money marketing them that way. They were unlucky shmucks who had close to zero chance of surviving and who decided not to be passive in the face of certain death. That's heroism enough. All the patriotic, flag-waving Jeebus-diddlers trying to co-opt their deaths can go hang.

Apparently this detachment of hijadis paid no attention to the fact that several passengers were on the phone reporting their every move to someone...a wife, an airport staffer ...and that's how they know what went on up there. At no point did Lisa Beamer try to make this a Christ vs. Allah slugfest, for what that's worth.

Now square in the middle of What an outstanding read, combining the best features of VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED, 1984 and THE WICKER MAN.

Well put!
Say, I found this in a little free library earlier today. Shall I send it along?

I liked it but it wasn't a rip-roaring read. Very piscatorial. Very pleasant. Not enough people got killed.

I love Bradbury, I love Halloween, and I love that cover art, but for some reason, that book is probably my least favorite of his magnificent oeuvre.

How do you win $5000 (Details Inside)? Never seen that on a book before.

How do you win $5000 (Details Inside)? Never seen that on a book before. It was a contest they ran when the book first hit the paperback stands -- back in 2009, I believe. You could get a full college scholarship and $5000 cash if you won. Alas, not only were my college years long over by that time, but the book sat on my TBR shelf waiting to be opened until long after someone else had taken the money and run. I literally blew 1/4" of dust off my copy when I finally took it down to read...
