Is the author pro facial piercings or anti? Very, very anti. The book goes on and on about how we're all going someplace in a handbasket.

It's actually fairly well-argued, but while he's railing against guys like Marx and Joan Miro for not seeing things his way, he fails to notice that he's not seeing things their way, either.

He feels -- and explains at considerable length -- that while Miro showed great promise in his early years, his work went to shit later and ended up on the garbage heap of history because he was all about tearing up the canvases instead of painting stuff on them. He explains at even more length why Mary Cassatt is a better artist than Miro and if he can see that, WHY CAN'T YOU???

Mary Cassatt has been dead for 100 years. So I'm left wondering how that relates to the downfall of our culture.

I've never attempted them. An old friend read the whole series, way back when we were devouring as much fantasy fiction as we could squeeze into our middle-school brains.
Reading-wise, I need to consider a minor bedroom redo, for better lighting's sake. i used to do my heaviest reading in bed, and that's just not prudent with the low lighting I have working in there at present.

Finished
...only to learn that he never got around to discussing the mandarins much at all, and in the middle of a rant about why African governments suck, he just sort of trailed to a stop and the book was over.
On the other hand, I really loved
I thought it was going to be a real-life Sadako Yamamura situation from what the author hinted at Goodreads, but it turned out to be a very different kind of story.

I recently started reading fiction for like, the first time in several years. I finally decided to start looking into the Megami-Tensei family of video games, which is probably one of the most complex family trees of all video game franchises, but my nerdy OCD means I have to start at the earliest and go forwards, like with all my obsessive hobby projects. That means, before they were video games, there was a trilogy of sci fi/horror novels written in the mid-80s, which I've started tracking down fan translations of. They start out about this teen computer whiz and occult enthusiast who designs a computer program to summon demons/gods (the franchise seems to use the term interchangably) from out of the aether and into the real world. As you can imagine, that goes about as well as you'd expect.

I have so many questions about that cover. The kind of questions that should probably never be answered, even here at ZAQB.
