Would you recommend the book? Nah. The author, Michael Medved, is a hyperconservative douchebag.

Huh. Another strange wrinkle in the case of the missing gay Jesus film (that it's public-at-large introduction would come in the form of a book by a reactionary author).

Medved wrote a series of "satire" film-criticism books in the early 1980's with his brother --The Golden Turkey Awards being one of these.
If I remember the entry for HIM correctly, the Medveds went on at some length about 'blasphemy' --though really, it's been a long long time since I read the book. I may still have been in school with Marxo Grouch at the time.
He (Medved, not Marxo) is another one of those Bobby Kennedy Boomers who took a really really hard turn right in the 1970's and 80's...big on the whackjob political evangelist circuit now, I think..

Dr. Kobb, and everyone else posting to this thread, don't know if any of you use Internet Archive, but I have used it on all kinds of subjects, and within the past few days they had an announcement that an early 1990s GLBT video game, long lost had been found.
Another development is the archive of This Week in Texas, a GLBT newspaper or magazine going back to 1975 or 1976 (remember that showing of HIM in Texas in 1975) is also now online.

A quick look in the August 23rd, 1975 issue turned up this full page ad ( imgur.com/a/vXeAwjs). It seems to be the same ad that Evan Purchell sent to Sam Ashby, although this does serve to prove my suspicions that that the Houston screening took place in 1975, as well as giving my document a proper citation.

Thanks for the posts, DoubleU and Deeky. I joined the Internet Archive, which is free, and even without a membership a non-member can do and find all kinds of things. I've been planning to send them a donation, since I have used their service for free for so long,my first project being searches of the the San Francisco Bay area GLBT newspaper, which, ironically came up with nothing at all on the 55th Street Playhouse and Ed D Louie and HIM, altho the house in SF that ran HIM did later run full page ads for the films it showed.
Deeky, didn't you tell me you used the SF Bay Area Newspaper search engine, and possibly also that of the DC Blade, and found no result for Ed D. Louie and HIM? It might have been in a post to a previous page to this thread.
I think the This Week in Texas archive is by an independent archivist, tho.
I just want the Boston Phoenix complete archive for 1974 & 1975 to finally become available, since as mentioned in earlier pages, porno films in Boston, and Washington,D.C. were dropped and replaced by soft X films for many months, or even close to a year due to paranoia that a US Supreme Court decision would lead to the banning of porno films, which of course did not happen.
Unrelated to film research, I was able to find most of the issues of Amazing Stories related to Richard Shaver, Ray Palmer, and the early days of the Flying Saucer era. Also, I found rare issues of Famous Monsters, Horror Monsters, and Mad Monsters, among others of that type.
Being a member of Internet Archive, I of course get emails asking for donations, and when I got one headlined "Lost GLBT something or another found," I wondered if it was HIM, but on opening the email, it was a video game as I noted above. Getting so much for free, I think I can afford to send Internet Archive a donation. Internet Archive even has the underground film, Flaming Creatures, which a Classic Horror Film Board Forums thread has a link to.

Hi everyone, I've been intrigued by this lost film for many years, but am relatively new to the search. I got in touch with DoubleU, who pointed me to this thread. After reading through the 22+ pages of posts, I wanted to let you all know that you've done a fantastic job piecing together a detailed history of Him. What stuck out to me in particular was the mysterious reel X9123669. Between the references to "hand-in-hand", "Why is everyone talking about him" and Adam and Yves, I have a lot of confidence that the Him trailer is on this reel. After seeing that the Kinsey Institute was contacted around 2017 and had replied that X9123669 might be digitized in 2018–2019, I decided to follow up on this (being that it's 2021 and all). After an email and voicemail, someone got back to me and explained the following: Given the current pandemic, this is of course a completely reasonable response. I wished this person well, and thanked them for their reply; but, considering that their estimations for digitizing X9123669 was completely off even before COVID-19, I decided to gently pry a little further and asked if they'd be willing to sell anything from their collection and/or make copies for a fee, to which I got an immediate response: Unless anyone has any other ideas, I think the X9123669 lead is a dead-end until the Kinsey Institute decides otherwise. If anyone has other ideas on what the next step(s) are to take, I'm all ears and willing to take the lead on it. It's worth noting that most lost films were confirmed to be destroyed in vault fires, and even then there have been copies unexpectedly turn up; however, Him just kind of fell off the Earth and is assumed lost. So, I think the search needs to continue until we either get a copy or confirm how Him met its end. Thanks again for all your hard work. Take care and be safe.

I genuinely wonder if the covid didn't take him. You know, with the preexisting conditions bro already had going. I don't mean to be a downer, but it is something I've wondered about since I first heard the news. Parker probably knows, but I probably let him down for the zoom memorial he had planned for Fred by not popping in, so I don't feel right asking him what he knows about cause of death at this late juncture.

Oh shit, Billy passed away?
I wrote the Obscurity and Beyond blog post on "Him" waaaay back. Hadn't thought about it in ages till today and thought I'd stop by here and see if anything new had come up. Billy/Fred was the source for a huge amount of the info that was uncovered for that original article, and we corresponded on the subject of movies and lost media for quite a while afterwards. He was a smart, kind and interesting guy.
Very saddened to hear this. 😞

[Billy Anderson] "passed away unexpectedly on October 2, 2020, following a brief illness." (From his obituary.) More than likely Covid, then. 😢 Which marks the end of what I thought was a pretty lucky run of having lost zero friends or acquaintances to it (although in this case, one I shamefully hadn't written to in quite a few years). Such a fucking bummer. I'm not religious, but I gather he was, quietly and privately so. If he's somewhere, I hope it has an extensive vintage film library and all the old newspapers on microfiche. Cheers Billy! 🍺

[Billy Anderson] "passed away unexpectedly on October 2, 2020, following a brief illness." (From his obituary.) Damn, he passed on my birthday. Such a sweet guy, even if I only knew him in passing for a few short years. Always took the time to get in touch whenever something new came up, always took the time to look over my work on Him and correct me where necessary. I've gotten a lot of praise from third parties about my piece on this film, it's genuinely gotten my foot in the door in a good few places, but I'm always quick to point out that I did little besides put everything together, most of my work was just following the preexisting breadcrumbs. Billy's research was quite possibly my main source of information, and I therefore wouldn't be where I am now personally or professionally without his gracious help, and I will be eternally thankful for that. May he rest in peace.
