Strange to me how in this age of daily mass shootings, you rarely hear about Post Office shootings, anymore. Remember when "going postal" was synonymous with high body count events?

We are into that time of the year down here where if you open your door for even so much as a split second, life will come in. It's as if teeming hoards of insects fill the air. It's not even 'as if'. You can hear them loudly singing day and night, like some weird Lovecraftian story.

We are into that time of the year down here where if you open your door for even so much as a split second, life will come in. I miss that, honestly. The insect population around here has just imploded over the past decade, across pretty much all species except for those tiny black ants. I mean, the fucking gnats are gone, let alone the moths, beetles, and bees!

I mean, the fucking gnats are gone, let alone the moths, beetles, and bees! That's awful. Last time I was up that way was over a decade ago, but I remember being impressed by the sheer volume of crickets and grasshoppers with every step in the grass around my brother's place in Cabin John.

Butterflies nearly nonexistent this year, but honeybees are making a small comeback, and I'm seeing the first grasshoppers to cross my transom in over 20 years.

I finally figured out something. My neighbor across the street looks like a hot version of Marjorie Taylor Greene.

A few weeks back, I saw a small family walking down the street. The father had tattoos covering both arms (and maybe some on his legs as well). The mother wasn't as covered, but she had a fair number showing as well. The kid, who I would wager was around 8, had a starter tat on her shoulder blade.
Nothing wrong with any of this, mind you, but it did occur to me that, if tattooing has truly become a family activity at this point, it may be well on its way to being disqualified as an act of rebellion.
Admittedly, this could depend on how conservative your family and/or community is. What's more, my reaction is likely just an extension of my increased souring on the idea of getting one because it's just become so fucking mainstream.

I'm actually alarmed at myself for positively reveling in entire days without communicating with other people (in person). I know deep down I should be feeling a sense of isolation and/or loneliness, but instead I'm practically basking in this solitude.

I came to a similar realization sometime in my mid-20's. When I was a teenager, I took it as a foregone conclusion that I'd eventually wind up with scads of tattoos and piercings, but by the time I had both the legal and financial wherewithal to start on such a project, I'd figured out that at least in the social circles where I moved, it was much weirder not to have any.

I made a jaunt to Carol's Paperbacks to get rid of some books yesterday. I looked at my watch as I was leaving and then again when I arrived. I was astounded to see it only took me half an hour to get there.
This is significant because I was formerly such an anxious driver that I could have sworn a blood oath that the trip took an hour and a half. I was positive that was how long it took.
When I went to EMDR training in June, the issue I chose to work on was my driving anxiety. It was simply gone, daddy, gone after I processed it using EMDR. It's apparently so gone that my temporal distortion has worn off, when I never knew I had one.

In a reaffirmation of my boomer/Luddite status, I stuck a post-it on my phone late last night to remind myself to buy a Powerball ticket today.

Over the years since telework became A Thing in the world of white-collar employment, I have observed a hitherto uncodified natural law: If a problem can be solved by only one person on a given staff, that person will be teleworking on the day when it arises.
