Ha Ha! I should have known that bit of Kobb lore would whet your true-crime-buff chops. Sorry, my concentration was divided (it being Thanksgiving Day after-feast and all). I was trying to follow along as my sister read it aloud to several of us at one end of the table. She has the tiniest voice, I was just trying my best to pay attention, without paying much attention to specifics. I'm sure I could borrow Dad's notes from her sometime and get a better look at them.
I would be fascinated to hear all about it. That sort of discussion at the Thanksgiving feast makes me suspect we are closely related genetically.
You would adore my nephew, I suspect. Huge kaiju fan. Especially the King: Godzilla! When he is around during the family gatherings, we nerd out, oblivious to the polite family-centered discussions going on amongst the kinfolk.
But no, my sister first shushed my niece about that little bit of family history when she brought it up, then quickly relented and went to get the sheaf of notes and read from them. Actually, I brought it up while visiting Ma today. She is as bad as me about the details, but she's thinks it might've been my Grandfather's Father, or HIS Grandfather. Anyway, that gives us something to go on. I'm get back with you on it in P.M. or Email or Call, or Thought Transference, or something.
Like I say, first I'd heard of this familial lore. Dunno if that was on purpose, or what. Helps to explain some of my own feelings at times over the years though. I kid.

My familial has no lore...only data...

A friend of mine from the Baltimore-DC punk scene, who is also a Scottish Rite Freemason, was talking about tartans, and how their meanings have evolved from just some plaid patterns that people liked first into signifiers of clan membership and then finally into signifiers for all kinds of things (Masonic lodges, trade guilds, labor unions, philanthropic societies, etc.), and it dawned on me that I'd heard this story before in a very different context.

Ehh, ritualistic violence in the BDSM scene, ritualistic violence in the LGBTQ scene, or guys in plaid with fluffy reddish beards daring each other to eat haggis...what's the real difference?

Haggis actually tastes pretty innocuous. It's just a type of sausage. People freak out because nobody tries to hide how it's made --there are grosser parts of the animal in hot dogs. I can't speak to anything in the LGBTQ scene, BDSM or otherwise, simply due to lack of meeting the right people at the right times.

I could not figure out which thread to put this in. It's more of a statement than an insight, but it did just occur to me that I have never seen a single Jason Statham movie. 'Splodey bang-bang movies just aren't my thing, I guess. I'm not saying they're below my standards. Y'all know my poor viewing choices. I feel like I'm watching someone play a video game viewing some of today's action flicks. I guess if you like well-choreographed fight scenes?
Never seen any of Reeve's John Wick series, either.

Statham has been in a lot of non-action films, though.

I don't like that kind of movie either, but I do feel like I saw him in something. Can't for the life of me think what it was.

The two that immediately come to mind are the Melissa McCarthy comedy Spy and Guy Ritchie's Snatch.

Honestly, you haven't missed much. You know, I haven't seen any of the Daniel Craig 007 movies, either. I hear they're good fun and alot more action-oriented than the old ones. That''s not necessarily a bad thing. I remember being kind of bored by some of the older Bond movies with Connery and later Moore when I was a kid. I'd probably like those oldies better seeing them now.

The John Wick movies are good. I've never cared for James Bond; he always seemed like a real dick. Plus Sean Connery was a real scumbag.

I used to like James Bond movies when I was younger, but I never cared much for his cockiness. Also, I was watching one when I was really high one day (this is also the only time I have ever been to Roosevelt Island here in the city, my friend Brian and I were visiting a friend of his), and it suddenly struck me just how fucking violent they can get sometimes. It may have been the bud, but whichever one we were watching (and all I can say is I think it was a Moore), it just seemed more vicious than I had ever realized before.

The John Wick movies are good. Good, but nonsensical at base. Maybe they make sense if you live in the world where John Wick lives.

I was really shocked by how Casino Royale sucked me in when stumbled onto it on cable TV while looking for something boredom-alleviating to watch however many years ago that was. I fucking loathe the Bond series, in all (or so I previously believed) its incarnations, but by the time I figured out that this weird Russian mafia poker-playing flick was the latest entry, it had hooked me hard enough that I stuck around until the closing credits. The thing about Casino Royale is that it doesn't in any way resemble a James Bond movie; it's more like a double-length episode of "Mission: Impossible," but with a lengthy cock-and-ball torture scene for a climax. I still haven't watched any of the subsequent films, though, because those look like they do resemble James Bond movies.
