Animal Kingdom wrapped up a few weeks ago. The story ended in such a way that was obvious and yet not, because it was based on a basic truth that the viewer knows early on but is likely to have kind of forgotten about over time. The easiest to predict outcome (the death of Shawn Hatosy's character Pope) still came off as a beautiful tragedy. All kinds of reasons why I shouldn't have liked this show, but I got completely hooked.

Hey, Deeks, I know you have a patchy (at best) record with AHS, but I was wondering if you were watching the current season. It's quite different from previous seasons, at least so far. I get the sense that Murphy decided to dial down the grotesquerie to set a different tone.

I get the sense that Murphy decided to dial down the grotesquerie to set a different tone. I saw a couple moments of it the other night. It centered around a mysterious figure killing denizens of a bathhouse in the early 1980s. Not sure if it is an allegory for AIDS or what. I do hope to check it out further.

Well, AIDS is itself a minor factor in the story, getting less minor as the story progresses, but it's also sort of utilized allegorically as well. Murphy is still ambitious in his storytelling, but the plot is far more straightforward - not so many intertwining threads this time - and, as mentioned earlier, they're not going for the shock here, or, rather, they're going for a different kind. I don't know how the story itself will strike you, but I think at the very least you're going to find the approach less indulgent.

One last point about the most recent AHS season (somewhat of a small implicit spoiler, fwiw): The second-to-last episode was really hard to watch, in more ways than one. I don't think I ever would have guessed that an episode of this show could make me cry, but this one did.

The TV equivalent of comfort food,I watched the Christmas Eve on Sesame Street (1978). Which got me wondering, which of the five boroughs seems the most likely place for Sesame Street to be located?

There are places in all of the boroughs where it could be, except maybe Staten Island, I'm not sure, I really don't know that place at all. (Truth be told, my knowledge of all of the boroughs outside of Manhattan is somewhat limited given how large they are.) The portions of the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn closest to "the city", as some borough folks refer to Manhattan, would be the best candidates there, although, being Manhattan-centric, I've always tended to think of it being somewhere on the Lower East Side.

I was writing a longer post about the massive amount of female-centric programming I've been watching recently, but I couldn't contain myself any longer, I had to let it out. I am obsessed with Yellowjackets. Like, junkie obsessed, like my stomach hurts knowing I have to wait until Sunday to see the next episode. I don't know how much any of you know about it. I gather it's gotten a lot of hype, and I'm usually the guy not believing it, but I will tell you: believe it. For those that don't know, it's all about a New Jersey high school girls soccer team in the mid-90's whose plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness when they're on their way to a tournament. The narrative bounces back and forth between their time in the wild, as they get increasingly desperate and give in to primal ideas, and the fucked up adventures of the grown-up survivors 25 years later. Now, part of my obsession is because I'm going through one of my every-few-years manias in which I become fixated on a character and/or the actress who plays her, in this case, Jackie, as played by Ella Purnell. Jackie is kind of a... problematic fixation, which I can't elaborate on without engaging in major spoilage, but it's not just that at all. It really is a magnificent show. Psychodrama, mystery (both on multiple levels), horror movie, wilderness adventure, and it's even funny (mostly in the modern period, not surprisingly). Great cast, speaks to me somewhat nostalgically (the characters are somewhat younger than me, but the overall '90s vibe, including the presence of Juliette Lewis and Christina Ricci, reminds me of my 20s), and one of the few shows I've seen that manages to juggle disparate tones (from the comic to the horrific) almost as well as Twin Peaks did. And, as if that weren't enough, it has a great credit sequence with a rocking fucking theme song. It's a Showtime production, so I don't know if it shows up anywhere else, but I highly recommend seeking it out. Below: Jackie (Ella Purnell) What is it about beautiful women with Keane kid-size eyes that makes me melt?

Happened on Netflix's Inside Job by chance, gave it a try, and was quickly hooked. Now I'm bummed they cancelled it.

Sunday's episode of Yellowjackets had Christina Ricci's character Misty having an isolation tank-inspired trip in which she has a conversation with her parrot Caligula, who has been manifested as a man played by John Cameron Mitchell.

We found a way to access to some Australian TV programs recently, notably the Down Under edition of Alone. It's odd how quickly contestants have fallen compared to their American counterparts. Caught a bonkers game show/variety program titled RocKwiz. It was decidedly Numberwang in its approach. We made no real sense of it. Also were flummoxed by Bondi Rescue, a reality show about a group of weather-beaten lifeguards. What an odd, inscrutable culture.

I love That Mitchell and Webb Look! I watched the first episode of their first season and it's hard to say which skit was the best.

Also caught the pilot episode of the Disney reboot Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. 100% what you'd expect.

Also caught the pilot episode of the Disney reboot Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. 100% what you'd expect. Everybody needs to stop with the reboots and sequels.
Especially horror. I was looking at the horror movies that have come out thus far this year, and they are nearly all reboots and sequels. I wasn't a fan of the shaky-cam/first-person or the torture-porn trends in horror, but at least they were different for a minute. Horror is in the doldrums again, waiting for something fresh to come along. In the meantime, they know asshats like me will probably watch whatever they shovel out anyway.
Sorry about the rant. Please carry on with TV talk. The above just occurred to me a day ago and I had to address it somewhere.
