Made steaks and duck-fat frites again tonight. This time, I grilled the meat in the last of the expensive Kerrygold butter that Juniper bought to make gingerbread for a friend's birthday, plus an herb mix we use a lot that bills itself as "Herbs from Provence" and a shot each of brandy and Galliano. I got the idea to use Galliano when I realized that it tastes like the spice mixture for sweet Italian sausage.

Inspired by Track of the Moonbeast, I made my Johnny Longbow Pita Pockets tonight. What's in them? I'll let Johnny himself answer that:

"My" famous, etc? For dinner tonight I expect to have more leftover porcupine stew plus the last couple brownies I had to make last Thursday, to get the smell of my last appt out of my sinuses.

I'm not sure how she did it, but Juniper just salvaged a catastrophically failed fondue into a superb vegetable-cheese soup.

Excellent surprise at Whole Foods the other day: mustard greens! For some reason, despite carrying many other types of greens, none of the supermarkets in the neighborhood ever seem to have mustard. I don't make it down to the Union Square Farmer's Market as often as I used to these days, but even when I did make it down there last fall, the farm that usually carries them didn't have any. So, this was a wonderful treat, and will save me a trip down to Chinatown, for the time being anyway.

Was seized with the urge to bake banana bread for the first time in maybe 10 years. Acted upon it. Smells soooooooo good

These are really good for frozen food. I didn't have any tartar sauce on hand, but still tasty.

Makes sense, what with the South's taste for stewed greens, but they used to be fairly easy to get around here as well, and they just haven't been lately. It's possible that I could get some from one of the small organic farms that comes to the markets, but I haven't been going to those much at all either lately, plus they have to charge a lot for their stock, because this country (deliberately) makes their style of farming prohibitively expensive, and I can only afford to be so indulgent.

Maybe you should start your own pot of greens on the balcony?

These were the first disappointment in the Chef Ramsey line of frozen goodies. Granted, they were better than the Totinos and similar brands. Maybe I just don't care much for pizza rolls?

I hope not, Kobbers. That's un-American.
