This one came together remarkably quickly. The genesis of it popped into my head one day when I was walking on the upper west side right after visiting my mother at the care facility where she was getting therapy. It also neatly dovetailed with my long-time desire to write a Minutemen song. I have a sneaking suspicion I may have unconsciously ripped off the entire melody from something I can't think of at the moment, but I'm still tickled stupid at how it came out. NYCG

Technically, the Gowanus Canal is already swimmable. It's just an unbelievably stupid idea to try...

Okay, in an attempt to lock myself into this fuckin' thing, I'm announcing here that, sometime Sunday, or possibly in the wee small hours between Sunday and Monday, I will be releasing the first Weebles Wobble EP on Bandcamp. You all have already heard three of the four songs, but I've worked on them a bit since, and the fourth is one of the most ambitious things I've ever undertaken (it's almost 9 minutes long, for one thing). Insert needle scratching record sound here.
Yep, it hasn't happened yet. Partially because it turned out that submitting to Bandcamp is a lot more involved than I had anticipated, but even more so because it suddenly occurred to me that submitting a cover song (as you may recall, one of the tracks I recorded is a Grateful Dead song) might have some legal implications, which it does. So... I either need to figure out what I need to do to submit the cover or I need to come up with a completely different original track to take its place. I'd really like to use that song, but I also don't know if it's worth derailing the entire release just to include it. Deeks, did you need to do anything special when you released to cover of 'Dance the Night Away'?
Sigh...

Honestly, releasing covers on Bandcamp is kind of a non-issue. I've put out at least five of them and it's never been a problem.
I can't imagine anyone is going to make a stink. I think it will be fine.

Pretty much every mechanical license used to move through the Harry Fox Agency. I have no idea how it works now in the age of streaming, but it used to be one-and-done.
In my (admittedly limited) experience as a human jukebox, it's actually live performances (club gigs and such) where you *maybe* will bump into someone from a performing rights organization.
Since streaming rights are fractional cents for everybody except big-label acts, unless someone is completely mad about scooping absolutely every tenth-of-a-penny owed, I can't imagine it'd be worth it to go after you.

It had occurred to me that, it being the Dead, the same band that allowed their fans to record every single fucking concert they ever gave and circulate the tapes, they probably wouldn't care. If they ever even found out, that is, given the degree to which this release is bound to light up the music world.
That being said, a little under $20 later (the vast majority of which was the one-time fee to Harry Fox), I have official permission to release 25 downloads of it. Should I find I need to pay for more, I will happily do so at that time. Their catalog is actually owned by Rhino Records at this point, so the good will or not of the band itself might have been moot anyway. As to whether they would have even bothered, well, quite possibly not, but they could have ordered me to take it down, which also would have sucked, plus this way I don't have to think about it at all.

Anyway, all of you got a preview of the other three, so here's #4. I started writing this song in March of 2020, and it very definitely reflects the remainder of that year. The doctor recommends that you strap in (remember: almost nine minutes long), but first take a hearty dose of your favorite medicine (be it a spoonful, a shot glass, however much your pipe can hold, whaddeva) so you can get the full effects of... Medicine

It first occurred to me that I had to put together some sort of artwork to go with it - nothing schmancy, just details from my collages - and as I was putting that together, I kept thinking of small tweaks the music might need, but I am exceptionally close to being done.
