Today, I went to Motor City Nightmares. I got to meet Clive Barker, and had him sign a copy of Sacrament, while getting to tell him how the novel helped me in my teen years accept and come to grips with my bisexuality (it's a dark fantasy, but there's semi-autobiography to it about growing up gay). He was very touched to hear how much he has meant to my entire life. It was a once in a lifetime moment for me, and I got a little emotional afterwards.

Really glad you got to meet Clive.

How often could he ever get that kind of feedback about his particular sort of book?

This weekend is Penguicon, my annual all purpose geekery convention! I'll be heading up the retro game department, much like last year, and I'm jazzed.
(Also Miz Fish, if you come saturday, cinema mal practice nee smithees does another show there! It's in Southfield)

I tried this with GREAT trepidation, thinking it would be the usual sugared-Crisco kind of white chocolate experience. It's DELICIOUS:

Today (May 17th) is Pack Rat Day!
(copied from elsewhere)
In keeping with the intent of Pack Rat Day, here are some Do's and Don't's:
Don't clean your room, basement, garage or any other area today. Don't discard anything today...It may be valuable. Don't even empty the trash today. You might have accidentally thrown out something useful. Do keep an eye out for useful stuff being discarded by others. Do go to garage and rummage sales. They can be pack rat gold mines. Do look around your belongings and be thankful for what you have. Do spend time thinking of uses for your things. Justification for saving is satisfying.

Thank Scrod I threw away nothing yesterday. Today, before reading this post, I started going through the heap of debris on my bed -- the unslept-on side of course -- and threw away quite a lot.

Yeah, I didn't get to fully immerse in Pack Rat Day as I'd have liked. It would have been fun* to just drag everything out of the closet and re-appreciate it all.
*Well, to someone like me.

I am really happy and excited that my "Hagatha the Towering 7ft-tall Witch" prop is on the way, and will be arriving on one of my off-days. I think she'll really pull everything together in the yard this Halloween.

This majestic fellow is known colloquially as a "Devil's Horse". They are huge and usually look like this or mostly darker, almost blackish. I don't know if that helps determine their sex or anything. I know I had to gently remove it from my car before leaving for work the other day, and today, he's chilling on my lawn bag. Hell, probably living the good life on my lawn scraps. I tried to place my hand next to it for the photo, but it kept making this cute "Nope!" side feint and I didn't want to disturb it any more than necessary. I know there's one of the big dark ones living in the azaleas street side. Maybe they're mates!

Maybe it's the same guy but he recently molted.

You know, that had not even occurred to me. Now I wonder if. The day of that picture he/she/it was perfectly radiant. So, maybe?

Note the pale coloring of the newly-molted arachnid here:

My God, it's that big and it's just a teenager! You can tell by the wings; when the bug is fully grown, they'll be long enough to cover its abdomen completely.

I haven't seen him/her/it since I posted that in late June (although something huge flew off my car as I was getting in it an hour ago). I'd like to think she's doing fine. I suspect she likes the garden just out of that picture's frame, or perhaps lives underneath the porch.

This spring I planted a tree in my yard and a few weeks ago I discovered a nest inside with three eggs. Northern cardinals. They hatched recently and yesterday the babies left the nest.
Good luck, little birbs! Live good lives and make more babies!

That is great! I'm trying to make my yard accommodating to the wild. It's hard, as the cat has other ideas.

I planted 26 new trees/shrubs this year. I hope that my yard is super lush in a couple years.

My sister is a wiz with gardening, and she has done some lovely plantings in the yard this year. Hopefully, the shrubs she's started will look really great under the tall pines. Kind of balance out the yard some perhaps. I love my pine trees, although I may regret saying that if we get a bad storm through. I have actually hugged my pines...until I found out about the pine scorpions. I don't do that anymore.
