I planted 26 new trees/shrubs this year. I hope that my yard is super lush in a couple years. What a lovely thing to be able to anticipate.

I hope this isn't a duplicate post, but even if it is I have probably added more crime-related "Separated At Birth?" photo pairings to this discussion since you last saw it:

But before we forsake the subject of gardens, mine is looking great this year and I'm seeing a hummingbird almost daily. Even fewer bees than in previous years, but I now have a hummingbird. And a new, smaller snake.

Giant Cricket Update: Have seen at least two different Devil's Horses in the past weeks, though neither looked like the freshly molted one in the photo I snapped. But it may have continued changing, I suppose.
Separated at Birth: Had some eerie examples. Is that from a true crime board you belong to or something? The Dahmer/Beiber resemblance cracked me up.
Tonight's happy was having fun riffing on movies with a bunch of other dorks earlier. We watched "Winterbeast" and "Mad Foxes", and both were tailor-made for group viewing.

FYI, Fishlips, the "before" picture you posted of Hedda Nussbaum is actually a picture of actress Marcia Jean Kurtz, who played a Nussbaum proxy in a Law & Order episode that riffed on that story. Actually, she played her in a follow-up episode fourteen years later, too.

They were all of the same woman. It said they were of Hedda. Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!
That pisses me off as much as the time I found out that that photo of Robert Sheldon (a victim of serial killer Bob Berdella) was really a mug shot of serial killer Brian Dugan.

Was out and about yesterday and noticed the Spirit Halloween banners flying on the old Staples building. Drove up and it appeared they were having a new hire meeting. There were already boxes everywhere, but nothing set up yet. Still, my favorite time of the year is just around the corner!

Makes sense since they've only about two months to make those Halloween sales each year.

Went to Riis Beach in New York this weekend. Had a great time being surrounded by hundreds of queers enjoying the summer sun. Riis is one of the oldest gay beaches in the country. The attached picture is from 1960. Almost 60 years ago. Coincidentally we laid our towels out in almost this same exact spot. I had a great time, even if I did get a little sunburned.

Here's hoping they have some better stock in the ephemeral stores in the wake of the improved economy. Things really slid backwards after the crash of 2008.

40 years for closure of sorts. Glad they finally identified her. The one that still gets me is Peaches (and her baby).

I think it's as much a sign of the new economy. More and more people are shopping online, so the stores carry just enough stock. Too much and they run the risk of having to either a) ship it all back to the warehouses or b) sell it at half price just to spare the cost of shipping it all back to the warehouses. However, there seem to be more pop-up places for Halloween than ever, so I may be off in my assumptions.

I didn't think of that, Kobbers. But the online stores don't really have that much that thrills me to the core.
I know what you mean about Peaches, Piffles. That one is hideous.

Went down to the Union Square Market to drop off some really rank compost, and this bus playing music through a loudspeaker goes by. I finish with the rotting matter and make my way through the market to buy some stuff. When I've gone about three fourths of the way around the park, I find that the bus has set up on the south side, on 14th Street, and a band of hippie types are playing live music on the roof. Four guys, two guitars, bass and xylophone, and three women, two singers and the drummer. Actually, the second singer couldn't have been more than thirteen and I got the impression from something the adult singer said that she was just sitting in with them. See, they were also selling tickets to come onto the bus and hang out with them as they drove around downtown, stopping periodically to play. Maybe she and, presumably, someone older had gotten on for the ride or something, I'm not sure. You could clearly see a bunch of people, some of whom, in terms of personal style, were almost certainly friends of the band, sitting around inside the bus like it had been fitted out as a sort of lounge. Anyway, I heard them play 'Dreams' by Fleetwood Mac, a somewhat reggae version of 'Keep On Rocking in the Free World,' the Joe Cocker version of 'With a Little Help from my Friends,' and 'Proud Mary.' I think that's it.
Oh right, I somehow completely neglected to mention that there were two other women in the company who basically danced on top of the bus topless. One was wearing only a slick black jacket that was completely open and the other had some sort of sheer top. They were both wearing pasties, but the woman in the sheer top couldn't keep hers on and eventually gave up and stuck them to her thigh.
They announced that they were going to drive over to the Whitney Museum and then Tompkins Square Park, playing sets at each place. It was the kind of wonderfully spontaneous urban moment that I love this city for. Under different circumstances, I would have given serious consideration to getting on that bus, but it wasn't in the cards today. So what if I were to find myself in the thrall of some sort of hippie cult? Who hasn't?
