Recently started a new gig in which I'll be writing articles for a site that directs people towards appropriate graduate programs. So, in a way, I've become something of an ad man. I wrote two articles for them in February, for $300 a pop. I only had time to do one in March (last month was loaded for me), I still wasn't feeling particularly comfortable in the work, and I got it in right under the wire, which probably caused me to do one less edit pass than I would have usually. So, I went back a day later and looked it over, writing to my supervisor (yet another fellow ex-chorister, viz. Lemmy and myself, and also, not surprisingly, the guy who got me the job) and told him that I would make a few cosmetic changes if he hadn't already started working with it. Not having received any real evaluation of my work yet, naturally, I was expecting all sorts of guidance on how I could do it better, but he tells me that it was great, they've already published it (with a few small edits) and the main guy is so pleased with what I've done so far, he's already bumping me up to $400 a pop. Things going this well in regard to a new venture is very unprecedented.

FINALLY re-potted my backyard plants. At least a year overdue on that project. Felt good knocking that little chore out yesterday. Boy did they need it. Rootbound-as-heck.

They told us at the all-staff meeting that there's going to be another salary study only 3 years after the last one, and one year after they approved a 2% COLA. That almost certainly means raises for everyone. With unleaded going for $4.29 a gallon that is damned good news.

Interesting little "resurrect old hardware" project on Reddit. Not particularly new. Probably of interest only to geeky reptiles.
(I have a couple old Chromebooks I might try to rebuild with a Pi0W board, just for giggles.)

My new debit card came in the mail after what felt like a month but was more like a week and a half. The old one got phished -- painful irony!
The next morning, before I even had a chance to use the debit card, payday!!!

I'm one of those people who loathes big expenses. Less than a month after I forked over $500 to fix my washer, it died outright. I actually called the appliance repair guys to come and fix it again before coming to my senses and deciding to just buy a new one. HOME DEPOT, said a voice in my deepest id, so I went and found a new one for 100 dollars more than I had just paid to watch my other washer die.
The astounding thing is that after I paid with my debit card for the washer, installation, haul-away of the decedent and a protection plan, I raced home to transfer money into my checking account to live on until payday...and found I still had more than enough to get by on. I could hardly believe it.

Busy trying to knock out as much yard work as I can leading up to the first week of June, when I'll have a full vacation coming up. I don't mind doing yard work, but any stuff I can knock out now is less I'll have hanging over my head while I'm off.

My Orlando Magic won first pick in the draft. AND we practically won first pick for the second round of the draft. Hope springs eternal.

Just got Li'l Ishiro back from the Honda dealership where he was getting a new starter put in. To my astonishment, it cost $238 less than they told me to expect AND they also fixed the window -- which was very hard to crank shut, requiring me to use both hands at times -- without my asking them to and without charging me a dime.

Well that's a rare nice auto repair story.

I saved a box turtle attempting to cross a busy section of the road on my daily commute. Motorists were surprisingly decent about stopping while I scooped her up and took her to the side she seemed determined to get to.

Holy shit! I just accidentally bought-- for a dollar-- a comic book containing an adaptation of the source story for They Live which predates the movie by some two years!

You mean Alien Encounters #6? If so, I've got that one too. Bought it when it first came out. My high school friends and I loved that story so much, we were talking about what we would want to do with a film version. We were both pissed and totally overjoyed when we found out that Carpenter had already done it a short time later.

You mean Alien Encounters #6? That's the one! I had seen scans of the story online before, but either I forgot where it had been published or the people who circulated the scans never mentioned it in the first place. What I was actually looking for was Alien Worlds, the antecessor series to Alien Encounters published by Pacific Comics in tandem with their terrific retro-EC-style horror anthology, Twisted Tales. But when I saw four slightly water-damaged issues of the Eclipse title in the dollar bin, I figured they'd make a fair substitute in the meantime-- and they sure did!
