Deeky, I suppose on HHF&R my favorite theirs is Anabella, which I used in a music video I made and sent to some of you other ZAQers.
Finding the lyrics to "Winners and Losers" was easy, but I have not been able to find the lyrics to "In Hollywood" by Ian Whitcomb, on numerous net searches.
Has he got some kind of Copyright Paranoia, or something, reason his lyrics are not posted?
I know in the past, I have posted the lyrics to that song on the various message boards, and I remember transcribing the lyrics from the preface pages of Joseph Wambaugh's novel, The Glitter Dome. I suppose I'll have to do that again.

Just remembered this one, after a time of forgetfullness. There are only two kinds of people: Buyers and, Sellers The song so excellently drives home that point. Joseph Wambaugh, a prominent crime story writer, prefaced one of his novels with the lyrics to this wisdom of Ian Whitcomb. Which are you (or me)? A Buyer? Or? A Seller? IN HOLLYWOODWhere is the place that they all like to go? It's Hollywood. Jack 'n' Jill, Bruce and Bill, Farrah and Bo Go Hollywood. Down on the boulevard Saturday night, You've never seen such a colorful sight, But make sure that you roll up your windows real tight In Hollywood. Where are there so many hustling stars? In Hollywood. Stuck in the sidewalk or parking your cars-- That's Hollywood. Most every moment you'll hear sirens scream; Follow the cop cars--you'll soon reach the scene And you're bound to end up on the big or small screen In Hollywood. In the tradition of countless marines Go to Hollywood. Tuck your equipment in super-tight jeans, Go Hollywood. Saunter the boulevard, you're out for hire, Milk all you can out of old men's desire, 'Cause in just a few years you'll find you are the buyer-- That's Hollywood! OK, Folks, I got the lyrics to "In Hollywood" by Ian Whitcomb and posted them along with the video. Firstime I remember hearing the song was on the old Tomorrow show with Tom Snyder. I think he performed the song "live" and the lyrics were easy to understand, although in the u-tube video I posted the lyrics weren't all that intellegible. Maybe it's just the Forlorn Rags of Growing Old effecting my hearing? Well, regardless, are there any different versions of this song with more intellegible lyrics by either Mr. Whitcomb himself, or another artist? I always like as many different versions of a song as I can find. I especially like the old cliche Two Kinds of People theme of the song. Sellers and Buyers Winners and Losers The Haves and the Have Nots. We need to get a list of all the variations on the "Two Kinds of People" saying. I'm sure there are many more.

Deeky, considering that the Day of the Temptations was many years ago (are they still in existence?), a whole generation has died out since the heyday of the Temptations, and I even had one youngster in his mid 30s ask me who Curtis Mayfield was. Ball of Confusion. That's what they world is today (ca 1970) And, that's what the world still is today. And, that's what the world will be tomorrow.

Anyone remember this one, contemporary with the Temptations' Ball of Confusion?
Deeky told me years ago that he once worked in a record store, so that would make him more familiar with these groups and songs unknown to most of the present generation.

I really like the lyrics of both Psychedelic Shack and Ball of Confusion by the Temptations.
Watched Ian Whitcomb's signature song 'You Really turn Me on,' not worth listening to, altho I might get the written lyrics to see why some radio stations considered it too "edgy" (as with gunhill road's back when my hair was short, which webmaster Deeky didn't care for.
Believe it or not, some contemporary music fans consider Ian Whitcombs 1960s debut as the Justin Beeber of his day.
Actually, he is quite an accomplished singer, songwriter, and author, who has done more in his lifetime than I could do if I lived 1,000 light years (as neil merryweather sung in the king of mars).
The firstime I heard Mr whitcomb sing his wise and witty song of advice to male hustlers of hollywood, on the tomorrow show with tom synder, he was introduced as a "punk" singer, and sang one song, to the tune of I'm looking over a four leaf clover, "I'm looking over my dead dog rover who I ran over with a lawn mower."
I don't see "In Hollywood," as punkish, and most of Mr. Whitcomb's music is from the 1920s or so, certainly out of touch with the 1960s generation.
There could be better from Mr. Whitcomb and I just haven' heard it yet, but for now, "In Hollywood" is his masterpiece.
He told Tom Snyder on the Tomorrow show that he actually did sing "In Hollywood" on a Christian radio station."
Hard to believe, isnt that? It might be on utube somwhere to check the accuracy of my memories, or availabe as a transcript, which in the past I have paid for mail order copies of varous TV shows.

Believe it or not, some contemporary music fans consider Ian Whitcombs 1960s debut as the Justin Beeber of his day. Have we seen his dong like we've seen Bieber's? Deeky, that is a good question. I don't know if Ian Whitcomb ever posed for any pictures where his dong was visible, and if he did so, they might not have been publicly printed, as was the case with Justin Bieber. So far, I have not had time to pursue reading why some people claim that Ian Whitcomb was the Justin Bieber of the mid 1960s. I only have 24 hours a day, and awoke early this morning, and drove to and from an exhausting work assignment in a town 62 miles down the highway from my shack, getting back just before 5 PM, after which I went to sleep and did not wake up until 10:30 PM. Am now drinking a pint of Ice House Edge lager, as an eye-opener, before I surf the net more, but right now, checking out Ian Whitcomb and his life, times, career and whether or not there are any photos of him with his dong visible, are lower priority. Those old Budweiser ads said, "if you've got the time, we've got the beer." Well, I've got the time, but I've got many things to do, such as putting dimmer switches on all the lights in my shack, and trying to find out if one of the batteries for my video camcorder and one of my battery chargers have gone bad. I'm hoping I can do that at Best buy, since they say that they service all brands of video equipment. Also, I want to find out if there is a cord I can connect to do screen saves from my VHS to my apple cell phone camera. I called the apple help desk and was told that under their rules, regulations, and code of ethics, they could not answer my question unless I had an Apple TV set. I did not even know that Apple made TV sets. I'm watching The Empty Canvas and hearing the sound by plugging my ear buds directly into the sound output of my VHS player, which is OK, but I need more amplification, which, as I told you and the rest of the board members, I am doing with my old, obsolete, but still useable video camcorder.

Any Melanie Satka fans here on the board? I haven't explored her output too much, just remember what I heard on AM radio, and I liked all of it, this one being a favorite.

Need a bit of help on this one.
And, hope some of you other ZAQBers can help me find the version of this song that was played on the country music radio stations, altho it was recorred by many groups, probably the best known was by Christie (forget his first name, was it Jeff?
One DJ who played the country version said it is the story of a (yellow) coward.
Well, I don't see it that way, because the narrator begins the song saying he has gotten his papers and collected his pay, so he is definitely not any coward who desterted and went AWOL.
He served his enlistment, and it was time for him to leave.
I have done some net searches for the country version but cannot find it.
So, if anyone else can find the country version, and post it here, or direct me to it, so I can post it here, I'd greatly appreciate it.

"Yellow River" has spawned a host of cover versions by artists as diverse as R.E.M., Leapy Lee, Elton John, The Compton Brothers, Middle of the Road, Chris Rea, Bernd Spier, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, and Joe Dassin (his cover named "L'Amérique" reached No.1 in French charts).
In Australia, Christie's version of Yellow River gained only limited airplay due to the 1970 radio ban. Local bands Jigsaw from Melbourne and Autumn from Sydney both had success with cover versions.
Mexican group Banda La Mentira recorded a Spanish version called "Río amarillo" in 1995
Mexican group Banda Pachuco recorded a Spanish version called "En mi mundo" (In my world).
It was also released in Germany under the name "Lemme Ria".
