Somebody needs to come up with an ALIEN OVERLORDS 2024 bumper sticker asap. You know, with all these disclosures coming to light.

Our last stop in Europe (the first time I visited) was in Greece, and there was a shop with exactly that sort of tacky adult novelty items and figurines. I wanted to buy one each of every nasty item in there, but was all out of Euros and had little room in my bags to store anything. I think I bought a deck of erotic playing cards.

Is anyone but me pondering the curious, echoey quality of the week's submersible disaster?
In 1898, Robert Morganstern published a novel called FUTILITY, OR THE WRECK OF THE TITAN, about a great new ship by that name sinking on her maiden voyage.
In 1912, a great new ship called TITANIC sank on her maiden voyage, causing some to comment on the similarity.
In 2023, a submersible diving on the wreck of the 'Titanic' crumpled in like a ball of tinfoil and the pieces came to rest on the bottom almost on top of the hulk of the 'Titanic.' The little ship's name was 'Titan.'

Does anybody think it's weird how cavalier everyone is being over the whole Titanic submersible thing? Some people died, and I just can't make myself feel bad for them, and it seems like nobody else can either.

Last night, I saw somebody say that the Titan fiasco exists at the intersection between gallows humor and guillotine humor, and it struck me that that was exactly right. It is, on the one hand, such a horrible situation that you have to laugh at it to keep from screaming, and on the other hand just a staggering, world-historic instance of fucking around and finding out. And crucially, at least one of the protagonists is a person who had hitherto made a lifelong practice of making sure that "finding out" always landed on someone else whenever he fucked around.

Weighing in from a very dry location:
1) It's infuriating that every time a very rich person gets into trouble it becomes a massive media/news event. 2) I have no problem with the various Coast Guards presenting the company and individuals involved with a bill for services rendered (since they can afford at least some of the costs --state supported rescues should be as close to "free" as possible). 3) Absolutely nobody deserves to die in such a place in such a way. Not even billionaires.
"God rest them, if there be any rest in the universe" --HP Lovecraft, The Call of Cthulhu
And that's about it.

In recent years it's been harder and harder to feel bad for anyone who's rich, especially if they each paid $250,000 to be crushed like bugs.

Well, again the intersection of gallows humor and guillotine humor is a very congenial place, for a whole bunch of reasons.
Even so, nobody deserves that kind of death. We start letting that idea go, and we're gonna start drifting into the billionaire mindset ourselves (Says a lizard who enjoys PLENTY of both gallows and guillotine humor otherwise.)

That's pretty much the way I'm feeling, (and yeah my sense of humor can be pretty dark) I feel bad for the 19 year old kid, who was reportedly scared about the trip, but didn't want to let his dad down. The captain on the other hand is a perfect example of why Howard Roarke is a lousy role model.
